Old Style Hats and Coats

As soon as I saw this I thought of a crime movie from the early to mid-20th century, it offers an air of menace that I found in no other work in this contest. This is a beautiful example where the less you see the more is left to your own imagination, where I sat wondering about what might happen next. With the background offering just shapes in the distance it adds to the mystery of this character and as one composition it is the outstanding work in this contest.

It was the detail of this work that really captured me and I was drawn into wondering what the subject was thinking about. I also found the light in the work to be outstanding and the little white scraps on the back wall give a nice distraction and really add to a beautiful framing.

I found this work to be beautifully composed and full of mystery. I wonderful example of where a work lets your imagination run wild and the choice of moving more towards monochrome over standard black and white adds to the felling for this shot being in or around the 19th to early 20th century.

This shot reminded me of when I was younger and I saw many crime drama films. I am not sure that the photographer was going for “the Lady Vanishes” style here but that is what this image feels most like to me. The pictures on the wall and the reflection give a really great framing to what is an overall beautifully composed shot and it certainly feels at home in the early to mid-20th century.

I really loved the focus of the subject in the foreground and the fact I could not tell if this is a candid portrait or not. The blur in the background is done well and having another subject in the frame gives the image great depth. Overall a beautiful image and well worthy of a top 10 place.

This work offered a great composition whereby the neon sign offers a wonderful depth of field and gives the image great framing. The character looks out towards the darkness and this gives the viewer the sense that there is more beyond the frame. When I viewed this image I thought of a Mickey Spillane crime drama and that hits the brief exactly.
