A beautiful stand out image. Fabulous expression on the young girl who is well placed off centre giving the image a strong composition. The light is soft and the image benefits from a complementary colour palette which is consistent throughout the image. Good lens selection giving a narrow depth of field and good separation for the young girl from the background. A great example of using the environment to produce a beautiful image.

Shooting on location can be both an immense challenge and fantastic reward all at the same time. Whilst you can take advantage of the adventure, inspiration and freedom of having the world at your fingertips; you don’t have the benefit of a completely controllable environment like you do in a studio. You need to choose your location, pick and pack gear that will be easily transportable and then style the model, setting and the shot itself to fit your creative vision – it’s not a simple task, and one that our judge Terry Donnelly knows all too well. In this competition, we test photographers’ skills at shooting portraits on location; using the environment as a key part of the story of the image whilst flattering the subject.

This image has a good concept and on the main works well. Exposure is good and the man is an interesting character. The monochrome conversion is a good choice and adds impact to the effect of the lines of light crossing through the image. this image may have benefited from having a wider crop to improve composition.
This is a great commercial picture, showing the woman in her working environment and the product she produces. It has a good narrative and is well seen and taken with good angles and strong composition with the woman being centrally placed. The image might be stronger and could have challenged for top spot if the light had been softer and the light bounce from the steel behind the woman was not as prominent.
