Panning

Brief

Panning is a photographic technique where a camera is 'panned' along with a moving subject, with the result that the shot shows a relatively sharp focus against a blurred background. Panning can be great fun – go somewhere busy if you need practice; city centres and roads work well, as they offer an endless supply of moving subjects. Sports events, particularly motorsports, are also popular places for panning photography.
