Judging panel

All images submitted to APOY 2024 will be reviewed by our panel of photography experts from Amateur Photographer magazine, joined by some special guest judges for individual rounds.

Nigel studied photography at Plymouth College of Art & Design and the University of Westminster, and was a professional photographer for over 10 years before joining Amateur Photographer magazine in 1994. He was appointed editor of sister title What Digital Camera in 2002, and Editor of Amateur Photographer in 2013.

Amy has been working in the photography industry since 2009 working across a variety of photography titles. Currently one of the Features Editors for Amateur Photographer, she also freelances for many other publications, using and reviewing all of the latest photography equipment. She has been a photographer for just over 15 years, and has had her images published in a wide variety of magazines and books, as well as exhibiting her work in a number of exhibitions.

Geoff Harris

Deputy Editor, Amateur Photographer magazine

Geoff is the Deputy Editor of AP and a veteran photography journalist with over 20 years magazine experience. He is the former editor of Digital Camera and PhotoPlus magazines, and is also a keen photographer. Geoff reached the finals of the 2016 Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year competition, and also runs a successful wedding and portrait photography business in his spare time.

Hollie joined Amateur Photographer in 2016 and now works as Technique Editor. Prior to working at AP, she worked on PhotoPlus magazine for nearly five years as a Staff Writer and then Technique Editor. She also has a 1st Class BA(Hons) degree in Photography from the University of Plymouth, where she studied from 2007-2010.

Ailsa’s first job in photography magazines was back in 1994. Since then, she has gone on to work on a number of titles, and she edited Black & White Photography magazine for its first seven years. She has also authored and edited a number of books, including bestseller The Complete Photography Manual. Although she still harbours a love of film photography and darkroom printing, she has recently (finally) dipped her toe into digital.

Jessica studied Fine Art at Loughborough University, where she specialised in photography. She has continued her photographic practice, which involves street, travel and landscape genres, using both digital and film. She also enjoys multiple exposures and intentional camera movement. In 2020, Jessica also studied MA Museums, Galleries and Contemporary Culture at University of Westminster, where she curated the online photography exhibition Materiality Exposed and graduated with Distinction. She joined Amateur Photographer in 2021.

Dominique Nok

Dominique Nok is a Black female portrait photographer and curator. With more than 20 years’ experience as a commercial photographer, she has been a magazine editor and has a Bachelor’s degree in (photo) Journalism and a Masters in Curating. Dominique is passionate about championing female artists from the African diaspora and from Black, Asian and Global Majority heritage.

David Clark

David Clark has been a journalist and editor since 1992. He has specialised in writing about photography for over 25 years for magazines, books, and more recently websites. He has interviewed many of the world’s leading photographers and has judged many photographic competitions.

Rod Wheelans

Hon. Life Vice President, Photographic Association of Great Britain

Rod’s father gave him a plastic camera won at a fair when he was five, but he says he didn’t become a serious photographer until he was eight. Retired as a professional photographer, he is now a committed amateur. He joined the PAGB Executive in 1990, President 2005-2007 and is now their Hon. Life Vice President. He considers his most important contribution to be as developer and Chairman of the PAGB Awards for Photographic Merit. Previously a member of the RPS Council, he served on their A&F Panels. He is a member of the London Salon.

Tyler George is a portrait and events photographer from South Wales. He specialises in all kinds of events from corporate to concert and business award ceremonies, as well as small private functions and weddings. He has 15 years of professional experience in the photographic industry and is also the social media manager for headline sponsor of APOY 2024, Camera Centre UK. Guest Judge - Round 1

Your guest judge for Round One, Black & White, is Aneesa Dawooji. Winner of the Power of Photography award in the AP Awards 2023, Aneesa is a portrait and social documentary photographer from south London. Her images aim to break stereotypes, celebrate community and initiate social discussion with historical references. She has been published in the Portrait of Humanity volumes 4 and 5, is an associate lecturer and a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. Visit www.aneesadawoojee.com.

Guest Judge - Round 2

Your guest judge for Round Two, Animal Kingdom, is one of the UK’s leading wildlife photographers, Ben Hall. As someone who previsualises his images, he frequently returns to the same location in an attempt to capture the perfect shot. He’s won over 20 awards in the British Wildlife Photography Awards, and has appeared on BBC 1’s Walk on the Wild Side, The One Show and Countryfile. Visit www.benhallphotography.com.
