How does this competition work?

Digital Camera Photographer of the Year 2018 (DCPOTY18) and Digital Camera Young Photographer of the Year 2018 (Young DCPOTY18 - for photographers aged 25 and under) are each made up of the same 8 categories.

These are: 1. Mono Magic (black and white photography); 2. On the Road (travel photography); 3. Wild Wonders (wildlife photography); 4. It’s a Small World (macro photography); 5. Character Study (portrait photography); 6. Smart Arts (smartphone photography); 7. The Great Outdoors (landscape photography); and 8. Street Seen (street photography).

Photographers aged 25 and under are eligible to enter the same categories in both DCPOTY18 and Young DCPOTY18.

Winners will be picked for each of these categories by expert judges, and prizes awarded. Members of the Photocrowd online community will also rate entries, with the crowd favourite in each category also awarded a prize.

How is the overall winner chosen?

Photographers placing in the Top 10 of either the expert vote or crowd vote in each category will be considered by the panel of judges for the special awards of overall 'Digital Camera Photographer of the Year 2018', and the 'Digital Camera Young Photographer of the Year 2018'.

Each photographer’s results across all the categories they have entered will be considered, with preference given to those who have displayed a combination of skill and vision with consistency across more than one category.

Who can enter?

The main DCPOTY competition is open to anyone, wherever they live, and with no lower age limit. For the purposes of entering these Digital Camera competitions, the standard lower age limit of 13 for setting up a Photocrowd account is waived.

The Digital Camera Young Photographer of the Year 2018 competition is only open to those who will be 25 and under on 12 February 2018 (the competition’s closing date). Each round of the Young DCPOTY is free to enter.

When does the competition open and close?

The opening date of both DCPOTY18 and Young DCPOTY18 is 14 October 2017.

2 categories will launch each month between October 2017 and January 2018.

Each category within the competition has its own closing date, with the final closing date of the competition at midnight (UTC) on 12 February 2018. Refer to each category’s contest page to see entry deadlines.

There will be no extension to the deadlines for entry.

How many images can I enter?

Photographers can enter up to 6 images in each of the 8 categories, or 48 images in total across all of the categories in the main DCPOTY18 competition.

Photographers who are aged 25 and under can also enter up to 6 images in each of the 8 categories, or 48 images in total across all of the categories in the Young DCPOTY18 competition.

How much does it cost to enter?

The cost is based on the number of images you want to enter. Entries are bought in advance and can then be used at any time before midnight UTC on 12 February 2018. The following entry bundles are available to all entrants, and entries can be used across any of the 8 main categories in both the main DCPOTY18 and the Young DCPOTY18 awards:

3 images - £9 (£3 per image) - half the image allowance in one category

12 images - £18 (£1.50 per image) - full image allowance in 2 categories

24 images - £30 (£1.25 per image) - full image allowance in 4 categories

48 images - £48 (£1.00 per image) - full image allowance in all categories

Each round of the Young DCPOTY has one free entry available to those aged 25 and under.

A discount on the price of entry bundles of 5%, 10% or 20% is available for Photocrowd Challenger, Pro or Master subscribers, respectively.

Multiple bundles can be purchased (eg 2 x 3 image bundles = 6 total entries) but the maximum number of entries that can be made across all 8 categories is 48 (6 images per category) for those aged 26 or over, and 96 images for those aged 25 and under.

Can I enter the same image into multiple categories?

Yes, the same image can be entered into multiple categories, but please read each category brief carefully and make sure that your image fits the brief. Each entry to a category for the same image counts as one entry, for the purposes of payment.

Note that it is permitted to enter an image into the same category for both DCPOTY18 and Young DCPOTY18.

Can I withdraw or swap an image once I’ve entered it?

If the awards are still open for entries then at any time you can remove an entered image and enter a different one in its place if you want to. Once the deadline for entries has passed, and judging is underway, images cannot be removed or swapped out for other images.

Do I have to sign up to Photocrowd to enter Digital Camera POTY?

Yes, there’s a simple signup process to register on Photocrowd, which will then give you full access to the Digital Camera Photographer of the Year awards.

Do images have to be taken with a DSLR?

No. Images can be taken on any device, including phones, GoPros, tablets, compact cameras and larger cameras such as DSLRs.

Do images have to be taken in the United Kingdom?

No, Digital Camera Photographer of the Year is an international competition and you may enter photographs taken anywhere in the world.

Can I submit retouched images?

Yes, retouching of images is permitted, although in some categories, such as Wild Wonders heavy image manipulation will be looked upon less favourably.

How should I prepare my images for submission?

Images must be capable of being printed at a minimum of A4 at 300dpi, with the image measuring a minimum of 2,000 pixels on the shortest side after any cropping. The submission of larger file sizes is encouraged if available, although this will not affect the judging and selection process.

What information should I include in the metadata of my images?

Including details of the camera model, lens model, ISO, shutter speed and aperture used is strongly encouraged, although this will not affect the judging or selection process.

We would advise all entrants to add copyright information in the metadata of all submissions.
