What are the contest categories?

There are ten categories to enter which are split over seven rounds (the first three rounds all have 2 categories). They are:

1. Urban Landscape
2. Wildlife and Nature
3. Portraits
4. Street Seen
5. Black and White
6. Smartphone
7. Wild Landscape
8. Abstract and Creative
9. Travel
10. Water.

Photographers aged 25 and under on 7th February 2019 can also enter the Young Digital Camera Photographer of the Year, which will run the same 10 categories at the same times as the main award categories.

Winners will be picked for each of these categories by expert judges, and prizes awarded. Members of the Photocrowd online community will also rate entries, with the crowd favourite in each category also awarded a prize.

How is the overall winner chosen?

The judges will be looking for a standout photographer who has not only won a round (or several) but has also demonstrated a range of skills and visual awareness in different categories.

Who can enter?

The 10 main awards categories are open to all ages and nationalities.

Any entrant under 18 on the 7th February 2019 must gain the permission of a parent or guardian to enter the competition. Entrants under the age of 13 on 7th February 2019 are not permitted to enter.

The Young Digital Camera Photographer of the Year Award is only open to those who will be 25 and under on the 7th February 2019.

What are the key dates?

The opening date of the competition is 22nd June 2018.

The closing date for entries is midnight (UTC) on 7th February 2019.

The overall winners of the awards will be announced on the The Photography Show, 16th-19th March 2019.

How many images can I enter?

You can enter up to 4 images in each of the 10 categories.

1 additional entry per round can be obtained via a code published in Digital Camera or Digital Camera World magazine.

How much does it cost to enter?

Digital Camera Photographer of the Year 2019 and Young Digital Camera Photographer of the Year Award are completely free to enter.

Can I enter the same image into multiple categories?

Yes, the same image can be entered into multiple categories, if you consider that it fits the brief for each category you enter it into.

Note that it is permitted to enter an image into the same category for both DCPOTY18 and Young DCPOTY18.

How many times can I enter the awards?

Each photographer can enter the awards once, using one Photocrowd account.

Can I withdraw or swap an image once I’ve entered it?

If the category you have entered your image into is still open for entries then at any time you can remove an entered image and enter a different one in its place. Once the deadline for entries has passed, and judging/rating is underway, images cannot be removed or swapped out for other images.

Do I have to sign up to Photocrowd to enter?

Yes, there’s a simple sign-up process to register on Photocrowd, which will then give you full access to the Digital Camera Photographer of the Year Awards and Young Digital Camera Photographer of the Year Awards.

Can images be taken on a phone?

Yes, images can be taken on any device capable of producing a digital image of sufficient size for entry. For full guidelines on minimum image requirements see the Preparing Your Images page.

Do images have to be taken in the United Kingdom?

No. DCPOTY 2019 is an international competition and you may enter photographs taken anywhere in the world.

Can I enter a photo that has previously won another photo awards?

Images (including similar images taken from the same series of photographs) that have previously won a national or international photography award or are entered into a competition where the results are pending, are not eligible for entry. This excludes Photocrowd free-to-enter photo contests.

Is there a minimum size for images?

There is a recommended minimum file size of 2500 pixels on the shortest side. Full guidelines on image requirements are provided on the Preparing Your Images page.

Can I submit retouched images?

There are no restrictions on the use of digital manipulation. More information on image requirements are provided on the Preparing Your Images page.

How should I prepare my images for submission?
