When composing an outdoor image, there are few structures that can direct the eye quite so successfully as a pier or a jetty. The leading lines of the framework can be used to great effect whether you're trying to draw the gaze to a certain spot, or create symmetry within the photograph. Be sure to look to see if there are any piers or jetties near you, or on your travels.
