Fabulous subject at the right time of the evening. You have balanced the light from the fire, sky and flashes very well. Unfortunately he is a man standing in the middle of nothing. I think this photo would be much stronger if it were carefully cropped in closer as the wide open space does not add to the feel of the photo.
Very nice balance of light with creative use of blue - the light and the gels across the model's face. I have never thought of using coloured gels in a photograph like this. The effect is superb. I like your careful balance of light value between the white main light and the gelled light from the side. If the one light was brighter or darker the balance would be lost and not so effective.
Brave use of strong backlight that has worked well. Great effect. I love the flare and the fill is balanced just right. I do find the dark patches on the building by her face (windows I guess) a bit distracting, but I am sure it would have been very difficult to see them when you were taking the photo.
Simple and well-executed portrait. Bald guys with glasses can reek havoc with flash photography. Hot spots and reflections often wreck a photo. You have done well to avoid both. I think there's enough detail in the brightest part of his forehead. I particularly like that you have a slither of light on the dark side of his face to bring a little extra shape and depth to your portrait. Well done.
Perfect balance of light that helps tell the story most excellently. I love that you have seen the light in the forest and wanted to create a similar look and feel to the light from your flash. You have succeeded well. The over all feel of this photo totally relies on how you have used your flash to bring about a natural feel.
I love this photo and your use of the most basic flash available to create such a cool effect. It reminds me of a Weegee style paparazzi photo. The stark contrast and bold graphic element of this photo makes it feel very dramatic, when the subject is not so dramatic at all. Of special interest to me as I have just written an article about figure to ground photography but didn't include anything about using on camera flash to create the effect.

***This contest is open to subscribers (members on the Challenger, Pro and Master subscription tiers). However if you're not a paying subscriber you can still purchase entries for £2 (GBP) per image.*** When it comes to portrait photography, lighting is everything - just ask selfie queen Kim Kardashian who said that, well, "Lighting is everything". A camera's flash can sometimes be quite harsh, or be seen as a quick fix to fill in natural shadows, but it can achieve some great effects when used thoughtfully and in the right contexts. Focus on getting a strong, balanced exposure with your flash and the awesome portraits will follow.
