This is such an atmospheric image and looks as though it is straight out of a film. The steam provides a perfect backdrop as the woman emerges, the light illuminating the scene so her face and clothes a visible. A picture that tells so many stories.

I like this image because as with so many of the pictures in this competition it has atmosphere. It does not look posed and captures well the thoughtful look of the soldier. I like the processing too, creating a vintage mood.

The newspaper tells of the rescue by the little boats at Dunkirk, quite poignant considering the new film coming out and the whole war stretches before these two. What are they going home to, where is dad is he coming home? The little boy looks sad and worried while mum or nanny looks determined to be strong. A powerful image and historically correct as far as I can tell right down to the issue of gas masks.

I find this image haunting. There is a look in this man's eyes that tells of horrors he has seen. The dirt on his face and the disheveled state of his uniform show the wear and tear of battle. This is a great image of a re-enactor who takes what he does seriously and really brings history to life.

I have to say something about this image, it's a perfect piece of street theatre. Perhaps the mother in law and the wife in a scrap with the poor husband/son in between, or maybe he's been cheating, who knows, but this is well captured.

It is difficult to capture a natural looking scene, but this does it for me. From the authenticity of the posters and suitcases to the expectant look of the soldier and airmen expecting a train it captures the mood well. The old lady is just the icing on the cake.

This is a great capture of close up action, it gives a real sense of what it would be like to be in the centre of battle. Under fire and carrying a box of hand grenades this soldier is running with his comrade to save the day.

I know this coastline well, Dungeness is the UK's only desert. The fishermen used to land on this beach and the whole family would help to pull the boat up a steep shingle shelf. The catch was then put into carts and pulled along the rails. This image captures the tough life these people lived, from the scars on his face to the clothes on his back he looks the part of a Dungeness fisherman.
