Retouching - Tilt/Shift Effect Miniaturisation

February 2024

This is a lovely composition and Photoshop of black & white and colour.

The magnitude of the shoreline seems to be on the charge of engulfing the right town along the shore.

The colour effect enhances the lighting aspects of what could be perceived as more of a dull day.

This tiny house should be overshadowed by the surrounding landscape. However, this brilliant example of tilt shift use enlarge this miniature and makes it the total focus of this sort.

This is beautifully composed and demonstrates a good use of natural light and environs.

This makes the top ten not just because it is a classic shot but also a classic scene.

This sprawling estate has been pared down to a doll’s house!

The surrounding countryside provides a lovely backdrop and centres the estate beautifully.

This is a brilliant composition. These houses look like an architect’s model and the colours completely bring it to life.

A great use of using the environs to set the scene.

The use of tilt shift here is great considering the environment.

Great tilt shift capture of the famous Thames at sunset. Iconic location and great time of day for capture.

Incredible use of light during the golden hour and perfect composition of the pleasure cruise.

The buildings along the shore look amazing in miniature.

I love this shot.

There is tilt shift effect undertaken brilliantly and gives a storybook atmosphere to this scene.

The use of light is also fantastic as this creates an inviting shadow across the foreground adding a sense of a bustling and lively environment on this lovely looking high street.

I love this hangar shot. This is a great use of tilt shift.

Hangars and aircraft are incredibly large spaces and this manages to miniaturise them to such a great extent.

This is another great example of a simplified view of heavy industry.

This is one of my favourites in this series.

The surrounding landscape is breathtaking and the composition is brilliant. This small town seems to rise from the waters.

The blue and white from the snow make the red of the buildings pop and come to life.

I really love this image. I love big trucks and used to play with them as a kid.

This shot definitely reminds me of that!

A really great tilt- shift example that juxtaposes heavy industry and big machinery with miniature scale.

Despite the entire scene being encased in white, the tilt shift used here still draws you to the small house perfectly composed in the frame.

The scene itself is classic but the approach is quite fresh (if not a bit cold !)

Thank you for this entry. This is a great classic example of miniaturisation effect using the tilt shift method.

Lots of action and detail in this urban scene.

The tram works well as a focal point and enhances the overall composition.

I love this viewpoint and how the tilt shift effect highlights the geometrical cross in the landscape.

Any arterial shout can capture this, but this effect highlights the juxtaposition of a serene hideaway surrounded and almost suffocated by the encroaching urban landscape.

Thank you for your entry which has secured the top spot!

This is classic tilt-shift and really draws your eye to what looks like a chaotic crossing but from the tranquility of soaring overhead.

The composition and lighting provides the realism for this miniature scene.

This image seems to illustrate the state of our global economy.

I love the geometry in this composition which highlights the need for order to accommodate our current wants and needs.

It is a sprawling metropolis of goods, which seems inconsequential in miniature form.

Thank you for this entry which secured the second spot in this top ten.

This is beautifully composed. I love the lone figure walking across the crosswalk.

It seems to capture the eagerness of the cars ready the lights to change and the composure of obeying the rules of the road.

The tilt/shift effect is a novel way of creating the appearance of shallow depth of field within images that are too far away from the camera to allow shallow depth of field to be created purely by means of a wide aperture. It can turn ordinary scenes of everyday life or places into apparent miniatures, as the brain is confused by what it sees! It is an effect that was very fashionable until recently, but maybe less so now. Dig around in your archives, or maybe now is the time to try this effect again, and see whether you’re still excited by it.

This is incredible and a great tilt shift shot.

There’s brilliant colour and movement and an overall sense of vibrancy and magic that you’d expect from Dubaï.

The overall composition and method are classic with the focus on the roadway cementing this into a fantastic image.
