This is such a striking scene! The convoy of cars snakes through the frame and guides my eye through the sparse desert landscape. Great framing, perspective, and use of leading lines. I also love the human element here, and the white of the vehicles, tunics, and sky paired with the orange of the desert sand.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Criss-crossing our lands, wherever humanity has gone they’ve built roads to help them get there and back, and to transport the goods that they need to get established and thrive. The architecture and design of the roads, their accompanying signs and markings, and the kinds of vehicles on them can be a dead giveaway for the country or part of the world you’re in. They carry the life of a place around on them, and scenes of daily life play out on their edges.

Meet the expert judge
There have been a number of aerial photographs among the submissions, but I appreciate how this image acknowledges the source of the bird's-eye perspective, the airplane. I really like the geometry of this photograph; nice use of leading lines to guide the eye to the grid of roads below, too. I also find drabness and emptiness of the landscape really mysterious - why do these roads exist, and why is there nothing around them?
