Roads and highways

December 2025

This is not an original approach – using a car mirror to create a dual impression of the same scene. But, for the context of this contest it works very well. All the elements are balanced against one another and within the frame of the photograph. We have this lovely duality of landscape – the sharp row of leafless trees in the mirror and their larger cousin a blurred and off-kilter position behind. Wonderful.

The blueish sweep of the road, with its red and yellow car lights steaks, is perfectly juxtaposed against the dark green landscape. The vibrancy of these colours is right on the edge of becoming too unreal. At this point though, it works very well.

Psychedlic indeed! This is a clever and well constructed image. Via the head and tail light streaks, we see multiple road directions. The overlapping of reflected imagery combined with the signs, car lights and vivid colours ,makes for a graphic, active image that even amongst the many excellent photographs in this contest, particularly stood out.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Criss-crossing our lands, wherever humanity has gone they’ve built roads to help them get there and back, and to transport the goods that they need to get established and thrive. The architecture and design of the roads, their accompanying signs and markings, and the kinds of vehicles on them can be a dead giveaway for the country or part of the world you’re in. They carry the life of a place around on them, and scenes of daily life play out on their edges.
