Seas and Oceans

February 2024

I’ve never seen a wave this colorful before! Great job capturing the prism effect created by the sea mist and illustrating a unique ocean rainbow. The aerial perspective in this image is also great and makes it look like colorful mist is forming a tunnel, of sorts. Well done!

Gorgeous! The aurora borealis is stunning to begin with, but seeing it reflected on the water is even more captivating. Great job with color and long exposure on this, too; in addition to the movement of the lights and wake, we can see the vastness of the night sky. Well done!

Wow, what an incredible image! I love the color palette and moodiness of the scene, as well as how you’ve framed it with the silhouetted figure in the corner. Great job capturing the moment, too, and waiting for the person to descend into the water and create subtle ripples. Well done!

Beautiful image! Great job capturing a photograph that speaks so well to the abundance and vibrancy of life underwater. What a wonderful array of colors and shapes, which are made even more noticeable by excellent lighting. I also like the framing of the diver in the background.

The sea can have many moods, and many colours. On its own it provides ample variety, and then in conjunction with the ships and boats that sail on it, the animals that live on and under it, the coast that bumps up against it, and the weather that beats down on it, there is no end to the ways in which it might be captured by our cameras.

I had to laugh when I saw this image - the penguins look like they are enjoying themselves, and almost as if they are flying out the water! Great job capturing them in motion, and nice composition, as well. I like that the birds and their movement fill the entire frame.

Such an intriguing photo! I really like the perspective and framing here. I lose all sense of scale, and the foam from the bow wave begins to look a lot like a white lace collar on a blue dress. For me, the photo speaks to some of the uncanny parallels between manmade and natural forms. Well done!

What an intriguing image! I’ve often seen photos of dolphins leaping through the ocean waves, but it is unique to see them swimming underwater from above the water itself.. I love how you’ve used the waves as a compositional device, too, and used them to divide the frame in thirds.

This image takes me back to the time I spent at the beach as a kid, and to the sense of wonder I felt. I love the low perspective and how this makes the foreground shimmer, almost magically. What really makes this photo for me, though, is the bucket; it draws my eye straight through the frame.

I really like the layers here. Great job using a slow shutter speed to capture the chaotic motion of the waves, which is then juxtaposed with the stillness of the cross. Nice color palette and framing devices here, as well. Well done!

Such a beautiful, eerie image. The ship looks a bit ghostly emerging from the fog, and the whole scene has an otherworldly feel to it. The subtle color palette is really nice, too. Great job with framing and using the clouds/fog to divide the photograph.

I love the impressionistic approach here. Great job using camera movement and longer exposure to capture the ambiance of the misty coastal scene. I also appreciate the muted, blue-green color palette; it adds to the ethereal, somewhat haunting feel of the image. Well done!

Wow - that is a lot of fish! I love how you’ve filled the frame with silhouettes of so many different shapes and sizes, and the way you’ve used light and framing to guide viewers’ eyes upward through the layers of sea life.. Great job!

Beautiful reflection image. I think sometimes we’re so interested in seeing what’s beneath the surface of the water that we forget about moments like this, when water also shows us the world above. Lovely color palette, and great job using the outline of the land to structure the frame.

Wow, it’s amazing how much perspective changes things. A rather mundane task takes on an entirely different look and meaning when viewed from above. Something manmade mimics natural forms. Great job capturing the leaf-like shape created by the net. I also appreciate the vibrant colors here.
