Self-Portraits

December 2024

A really beautiful image of a woman captured in black and white. There's little or no information to go on but I like the thoughtful quietness to this picture. The composition is working well as the she turns her head sidewards. The studio setting is simple with one light I suspect and a plain background, which adds no distraction. Great work.

Okay so it's not your normal self portrait but I think this abstract take on the theme has worked really well here. The portrait element is left to a bare minimum so no clues as to who they are, which only adds to the mystery I think. What I really love are the colours - the almost prism like effect working really well. Great observation.

A really beautifully detailed monochromatic image of a man with a beard staring intently into the camera and directly at the viewer. Super sharp at f5.6 there's plenty to look at. The crop is quite severe but nevertheless the composition is working really well. I can't fault it technically. Great work.

Wow I love the energy to this self portrait - it's showtime! Shot in what looks like a function room in a hotel. The vibrant red carpet working well against the gold lame fabric - the women's arms outstretched like an exotic bird. Great work and amazing styling. Fantastic!

A really nice portrait in black and white - a severe crop through the top of the head brings our attention in sharp focus to the eyes of the man. His gaze is direct and unflinching. The plain white background contrasts nicely to the darker tones. Great work.

Love this scene of what look like a teenage boy at home in his room. Eating -sleeping -doing his homework and trying on his new cap. Love all the details - the Batman duvet and signed school shirt gives a real sense of time and place in this young man's life. A great one to look back on. Great technical skills too in capturing each self in this composite image. Nice work!

A lovely dreamy quality to this self portrait of a women looking off camera through a window. The focus has been dropped throughout the image but somehow it still works really well, better in fact than if it had been in focus I suspect. Even the composition feels off but again this only adds to the intrigue. Always good to break the rules - you never know what you might find. Excellent work.

A really stark portrait with loads of great detail in this monochromatic capture. I love the expression - difficult to read but definitely catches your attention. The illuminated face stark against the deep black background - the image is super sharp throughout at f7.1 - the detail on the face and fabric is amazing. Great work.

I really love this image - I was reminded of Man Ray and the surrealist movement from the 1920s - the soft monochromatic tones working beautifully. We are treated to 2 versions of the same face - a side profile and one looking directly at the viewer. The slow shutter speed creating a dream like quality. Great work.

A really interesting image and composition very nicely executed. Reminiscent of an art house magazine from the 1960s perhaps. Love the different versions of the same women - the vertical lines of the curtains disrupting the view. The dark moody lighting adding to the atmosphere - great work.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Turning the camera on oneself can be a challenge for the photographer, mired as it is in questions of self-image, ego, and one's public persona, with technical challenges thrown in for good measure. But it's a practise that serious artists have undertaken for many centuries, and one that doubtless rewards when time, effort and thought are applied to it.
