As this shot demonstrates it pays to look at your subject from a different angle! Well done to our first place photographer for taking this superb shot. They have fully embraced the shadow and silhouette theme.
There are a couple of key elements the photographer has used to make this set up work. Firstly the tight composition of the shot removes surrounding distractions and creates an abstract result. Secondly the high key black and white finish emphasises the dark patches of the shoes pressed against the white floor. A simple yet effective result.

Join the dark side and show us how you can capture images of striking silhouettes or shadows. Composition and exposure are key, and we’re looking for bold images where dark areas of the picture are allowed to become black and crushed.
Our third place image makes excellent use of the energy and atmosphere in the setting. The photographer reveals why it is so important to break the rules and shoot into the sun. They’ve done an excellent job of keeping detail in the foreground of the frame, which has been helped by the low position of the sun in the sky. The energetic silhouette of the child running across the scene has been perfectly timed so their reflection is seen in the puddle. There’s something very Henri Cartier-Bresson to it!
There are so many shapes in this image we've lost count! This image is all about composition, tone and shape, and the end result fully engages the viewer. There’s a range of wonderful tones in the scene starting from the bright whites in the background, ranging to the dark blacks in the shadows. This scene was made for black and white photography! The photographer has timed the exposure well to ensure the shadows in the background are exaggerated and leaning into the scene. Finally, the timing of the passer by with their pentagon shaped umbrella just finishes it off nicely.
