Shallow depth of field is a great way to isolate your subject from its environment, and draw it into focus against an obscured background. This technique is used a lot in portrait, sports and macro photography, or any situation where you want to zero in on the action of your subject, or increase the amount of light going into your lens. This is a fun and creative technique, and a great skill to have in your armoury.
