Small Spaces

December 2021

I love the humour in this photograph and sense of reality of the situation. The beautiful mini Hilton set against the backdrop of a huge home. The photograph is well constructed with the the van taking centre stage with the person looking back at us. The chairs give the space on the left side a point of interest whist the larger home looms over the whole scene. Given a choice give me the camper van or Hilton on wheels any day. Great and fun photograph.

As the Pink Floyd song goes 'Where just two goldfish in a fishbowl in a fishbowl year after year' The playfulness adds to this photograph. How was it constructed. I'm now trying to think how can you place such small figures into a lightbulb? the magic of photography and how we see photographs as been real or constructed. I love the figure on the left trying to escape whilst the other seems to have accepted his fate. Fun and fitting the brief. well done.

The colour in the face against the neutral grey cut out is wonderful as is the sheer delight on the child's face. This is one of those images that makes us the viewer smile back. It's simple but that adds to the drama and beauty of this image The off centre aperture works well. A fun photograph that is something we all need in the world right now.

This image works because of the setting. We need the out of focus branches of tress set within the real world to make this small set piece come alive. We see these normally within the confines of a child's bedroom and because this is placed away from the familiar - it gives the image a surreal edge. The small figure looking out onto a world we the viewer can observe. A very nice photograph.

A surreal photograph that asks many questions. Who is looking at who? which one of us is potentially trapped the viewer or the person in the photograph? The quality of light adds to the film noir quality. This looks like still from a Hitchcock film and that gives the image its power.

You get a real sense of feeling trapped looking at this photograph? Is this a real person in the image or a toy? Does it matter? We feel nearly as trapped as the person in the photograph. The backlighting and space give a real sense of drama which make us feel both uncomfortable and unsure of what we are viewing. A really strong photograph. Well done.

This is a really beautiful and strange image. Why two baths? It hardly seems the setting for a romantic soak in a tub. The tones within the Black and White photograph are stunning as is the placement of the baths and the photographer having the confidence not to include the entire bathtubs in the frame. The small window adds to the drama and surreal like quality of the image.

A scene many of us know far too well. The commute to work on a morning or evening. What make this image stand out from many like this is the spacing between the two people on the platform, the look on the persons face on the left and the matter of fact acceptance of this the daily routine. The other thing to consider is that the photographer in question themselves will probably be on the next train facing a similar fate. A well seen image.

Peas in a pod. The clever use of light and a reflective base really give a sense of drama to this photograph. The dark back ground adds drama and puts the focus onto the main subject thus elevating the humble pea into something larger than what we know it to be. A technically and clever photograph.

A really nice photograph of a now familiar subject that dominates many cities skylines. The use of Black and White makes the image stand out from many other as does the use of the angles. The decision to make an abstract rather than try and fit the entire wheel in is clever and shows a level of confidence on the part of the photographer. It also shows us the sheer scale of the entity next to the small pods. A photographers photograph. Well seen.

The single figure at the end of the narrow tunnel really makes this photograph. It gives the image a central and singular viewpoint which is aided by the tunnel and light coming from the small windows. It also adds the what is happening aspect to the image. Is the person looking at us or outside into the space. What does the space look like. Is there a drop? This is a scene potentially from a film. Will they jump? Great Image.

The idea of small can be both physical and within out own mind and this is an image that works on both levels. We see the scale of the individual looking out into the vast space whilst also having the time to confront our own fragility. The use of colours and light add to the photograph as does the low angle. A well composed and thought provoking image.

The sheer quality of this image shines through. The beautiful soft light, the arrangement of the mushrooms and the detail on the subject draw us the viewer in. The detail on the subject is the real surprise and suggests that small is indeed beautiful but also full of wonderment. I have never stopped to look at something within the micro world. having seen this photograph maybe i should.

Constructed or seen? Either way this is a great photograph. It shows the wonders of the world regardless of size and scale. The camourflage that the owl uses to both live in this world and hide from potential predators is seen fully in this image. the use of colour adds to this as does the dead eye expression coming back from the owl to us the viewer. A well constructed photograph.

Set within this image - which through its subject matter and sense of colour is already stunning. Are a series of possibilities. The possibility of the larger outside world on the other side, the playful photographic spaces or apertures within the scene we are looking at and the space we have come from to get into this space. Photography is a wonderful medium when used well. Great image.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** If it looks like a tight squeeze, let’s see it. Whether it’s a tiny but perfectly formed interior, or a crack between rocks such as the brave individual above is choosing to squeeze themselves through. Small spaces can be comforting and secure, but get too small and they can suddenly become claustrophobic and limiting.
