Small Spaces

December 2021

The success of this image lies in its monochromatic look. The almost singular colour with a pop of green from the plant which is precious as its been covered. The scale of the vast plain next to the delicacy of this little bit of life is a wonderful juxtaposition. This is a well observed and seen photograph.

Photographs sometimes make us smile. This is one of those images. The use of colour and the face smiling through the circle is a lovely keepsake that would be treasured on any family wall. Children always make us feel better and have the ability to find happiness in the smallest and tightest of spaces. Print this out and frame it. It would be a shame to have it only on a computer screen. Lovely.

Scale and what seems possible tend to come from a child's imagination. This is a playful image. We have seen this in many films about shrinking humans and it never stops being interesting and othering up visual opportunities. When my own computer breaks I can now wonder why it does not work - sabotage.

The saying "I've got the whole world in my hands' seems appropriate when looking at this photograph. It makes us think about possibilities. It could also make us think about the issues in the world right now. How fragile things are and how if we don't get things right what could happen. The world is a small and beautiful place within the larger universe. A photograph that makes us ponder.

There is a lot to like about this winning image. The juxtaposition between the two structures. The scale and dominance of the historical Abbey now playing second best to the makeshift structure in the foreground. The play between scales and construction versus history adds extra dimensions to the photograph which is a well constructed and seen image. Well done.

The neutral colours other than the dominant red ball seem so small and out of scale to each other, which I like. The car heading into its own story. The light between the left and right side of the card is wonderful and talks about light within photography. i love the idea that you could just fold the card up and pack this all away in seconds. Then what is left? The photograph.

This could be anything. An idea of a new city in the future, A motherboard in a computer, A dream. This is a photograph that takes me on a journey. Where, I'm not sure. But it allows me to think about other things in life and that for me can be both small and large. The use of colour and lines add an extra dimension of something out of this world.

This is a clever and well constructed photograph. We see the onion as been elevated from what it is used for. The way the light shines through the central element adds a point of focus to the image whilst working to the brief very well. A delicate still life that requires great skill and imagination.

Small spaces especially those where we feel confined are never comfortable to view but at least easier than actually been enclosed within them. the singular light and lines taking us into a central point add to this sense of enclosure as do the bare walls. The use of a wide aperture adds to that sense of entering and makes the viewer uneasy when looking at this photograph. Well done.

The photograph is entitled 'An Abstract' and that's fine. I'm not sure quite what it is i'm looking at - but it evokes a sense of space, a sense of something bigger. This is a photograph that can mean different things to each person who views it and that cant be a bad thing. For me it takes me to a quiet place.

This reminds me of Gulliver's Island. the giant within the landscape. The close up adds extra weight to the image as does the additional light on the face. The contrast between the skin tones and the greenery work very well as does the facial expression of the person. A clever image, well constructed.

Sometimes the space we see is not there. This applies certainly to sports like this and motor racing where they all go for that one space to get a head. I like this image because of what it implies and what we don't see. The afterwards. Did all the bikes make it through the corner? we will never know and that is the strength of this image as well as the great composition and timing of what we do see.

This reminds me of ideas around the Matrix. Infinite possibilities about scale and life. The boxes just go on forever. They seem empty- Why? what could they be used for? The best photographs make us think, they take us on a journey. The use of light and B/W adds drama to this image.

I love the rim light against the owl and the sheer blackness and amount of dark empty space away from the tree and owl. This dead space really adds to the image and gives a sense of scale to the place. We know that there are things in this space we just cant see them. This would make a great magazine cover as it would allow an editor to work with text.

Alice in Wonderland. The fun this person must have had in such a space is beautifully captured. Am I looking at one person? what are they looking at. Given its taken at a Space centre - The ideas of small v scale and the infinite idea of space seem to collide in this image.

The delicacy of the subject. The space around the main central subject really make this image work. The use of a narrow aperture to blur the background gives the colours time to take centre stage. How can something so small be so perfect and beautiful. This world is full of small wonders. A well considered and thought out photograph.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked below 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** If it looks like a tight squeeze, let’s see it. Whether it’s a tiny but perfectly formed interior, or a crack between rocks such as the brave individual above is choosing to squeeze themselves through. Small spaces can be comforting and secure, but get too small and they can suddenly become claustrophobic and limiting.
