Sports pitches

When I chose this image as the winning entry for Sports Pitch, what stood out to me was how different it felt from the usual idea of a football field. It isn’t conventional at all, and that’s exactly why I found it so unique. The rough boundaries drawn in the sand give it a raw, honest character like a reminder that the spirit of sport doesn’t need perfect conditions, just space and imagination.

What really sets this photo apart for me is the angle it was captured from. Seeing it from above gives the pitch a whole new dimension, almost transforming it into something bigger than it is. The textures, the shadows, and the simplicity of the setup become part of the story.

I love that this photo shows football in its purest form stripped down, imperfect, but full of possibility.

When I first saw this image, I was blown away. A football pitch in the middle of rugged rocks and surrounded by the ocean it’s not something you come across every day. What makes this shot so powerful for me is how it captures the contrast: the perfect symmetry of the green field against the raw, untamed beauty of nature around it.

The aerial angle adds to the magic. From above, the pitch looks almost surreal, like it was carved into the landscape with purpose, yet it feels completely isolated at the same time. It’s the kind of photo that makes you stop and think about how universal football is you can literally find it in the most unexpected corners of the world.

To me, this image isn’t just about sport it’s about community, resilience, and the way a game can bring life even to the harshest environments.

This photo instantly caught my attention because of its grandeur. Unlike the raw simplicity of the makeshift pitch or the remote beauty of the seaside field, this one feels powerful in a completely different way. The symmetry, the sweeping curves of the roof, and the sheer scale of the stadium give it a sense of majesty that only comes with world-class arenas.

What I love most is the perspective it feels almost like the stadium is opening up to the sky, framing the pitch perfectly in the middle. The clean lines and sharp geometry make it look more like a piece of art than just a place to play.

For me, this image is a reminder of how football brings people together on the biggest stages, where history is made and memories are shared. It’s not just a pitch it’s a temple for the game.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Scenes of heroic battles and lacklustre draws. Victories and losses. Personal and team effort. We check out of everyday life and check into the world of sport when we step onto the pitch or court. The focus of this contest is a little more on the areas of play themselves, be they professional stadia, or the local fields. But this of course can include sport being played, showing them in use, being trodden on, run up and down, and generally doing what they were built for.
