Though not saturated with colour, this is nonetheless a beautifully composed photograph. Its formal structure incorporating the verticality of the interior space, perfectly frames the slender window frames and their intricate stained glass designs. I appreciate the balance between the subject (stained glass) and the interior architecture.

Meet the expert judge

This contemporary interior incorporating vertical shafts of abstract stained glass, has been expertly captured. The timing is important — the angle of the sun's beams leaving the wash of the windows' colour on the interior frames. Gazing left to right, we see the windows clearly, then they disappear leaving only the horizontal coloured stripes of light.

Ordinarily, lens flare caused by sunlight directly entering the lens, should be avoided. However, in certain circumstances it can work to great effect. This is one such occasion. The dramatic shafts of light and aperture reflections, combine effectively with the angled upward view, and add a dramatic note.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked 1000+ in this week’s Leaderboard.** If alongside your interest in photography you are also a serial visitor of churches, you will no doubt have tried to capture the magnificence of stained glass with your camera. Whilst not confined solely to religious settings, this is where most of us see it in its splendour. Photographing it effectively can be tricky, especially when trying to balance the exposure of the brightly lit glass with the interior of the building within which it is set.
