Steps, Stairs and Escalators

January 2024

I love the simplicity of this shot, the lines, curves, reflections, and when stairs make you want to climb them, I think they work as an architectural feature. Nice focal length to give the image a sense of what your eye would see.

This image works really well for me in black and white, to minimise disruption for the viewer. The people scattered on the steps are just great graphic shapes, and the angle it was taken flattens the steps to almost make them feel like lines only.

Electric colouring, great symmetry, and nicely taken. A great architect, and sometimes it makes you wonder the only people who would experience this unique staircase, would have been the guests to the house, as it was designed before photography was invented. I remember when this staircase was refurbished at great cost. But it is looking stunning, lovely shot.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Whether spiral, straight, wooden or metal‚ architects of all eras have found creative and pleasing ways to weave steps and stairs into their buildings. Escalators might offer a little less opportunity for design flair, but as photographic subjects they all share the same visual opportunities - an array of patterns, repetitions, and leading lines that are impossible to ignore.
