Straight Lines

October 2021

This photograph reminds me of the Constructivist photographs of Alexander Rodchenko, where his compositions were characterised by straight up or down viewpoints. The simplicity of this photograph is its strenght. The diagonal lines perfectly making a balance with the shadows of the two people sitting on the steps. The photograph also has a wonderful vertiginous feeling, due to the the extreme viewpoint. A strong photograph.

This is the winning image because of its elegance and simplicity of composition, which sucessfully explores the theme of Straight Lines. It has all the perfect components of a strong image; thoughtful composition and good use of colour, or in this case, black and white. It has a good balance of intricacy and sparce areas. It also explores the theme in a more original way, a wonderful photograph!

This is a wonderful and creative approach to the competition brief. Its a refreshing change to find a photograph that so sucessfully uses blurryness as an aesthetic technique. I love the blockiness of the colour, it reminds me of a Gerhard Richter painting, which are themselves based on photographs. The simple elements within the photograph strongly accentuate the straight lines within it. A great image.

Firstly I love the title of this image, it gives a humour to this fantastically constructed image. (Titles are so important and are often overlooked by the photographer) Its wonderful how fully realised the concept for this photograph is. The photographer has considered every element within the frame and the colour palette is excellent. Its a surreal but very sucessful photograph.

I love photographs that have been constructed rather than found in the world. This is a very simple but strong image. It perfectly explores the competition theme of Straight LInes. The photographers strong use of dramatic lighting cleverly creates shadows from the fork. Although a simple image its composition is strong, the shadows falling in a balanced and aesthetic way across the photograph.

I love the strong, if slightly harsh aesthetic of this photograph. I assume its made with a flash which gives it the super-sharp feeling. The photographers response to the competition brief is very strong, an original response to the theme of straight lines. The way the background fades into black makes the bowl of straws stand out and gives a slightly surreal feeling.

This is a very simple but strong photograph. I love the fact that most of the photograph is actually deep black shadow. The lines the shadows make are a very elegant way of dividing the composition into distinct sections. The photographers choice to just show the persons leg and arms was correct. It makes the photograph much more ambigious and mysterious.

This is a perfectly composed and constructed photograph. The column is postioned off centre which was a good decision to balance against the moving metro train. Shooting moving vehicles is difficult, but in this photograph the yellow train completely fills the frame which is excellent, which is difficult to achieve. The completeness of the yellow across the frame makes a very graphic image.

I love the crispness of this photograph. Its sharp over the entirety of the photograph, demonstrating a strong depth of field. The contrasty quality of the light makes perfect shadows which create interesting shadows. The dynamic shadows, lines and textures within the image make interesting spatial connections within the photograph. Ths is actually complex image, displaying differing textures and tones, wonderful!

This is a very strong compostion, reminds me of the American photographer Frank Golkhe's work or part of the New Topographics tradition. Its lines are indeed straight, which can be difficult with architectural photography. I love the tones and deep black of the sky. It explores the theme of Straight Lines in an original way, incorporating lines of all types and directions. A great image!

This photograph is almost too perfect, which I mean as a compliment! The lines and geometries within the photograph are so straight, it answers the competion brief completely! I love the colour palette of the image, it reminds me of a David Hockney painting. The photograph is evocative of a hot summer day, which is a wonderful thing to achieve. The peeling paintwork on the top left side of the brick wall bring the image back into reality. It would have been too easy to correct in Photoshop, but i'm glad the photographer chose not too.

I love this abstract and elegant image. Its refreshing when photographers choose to 'construct' the image, rather than finding the photograph out in the world. The light and tone of the photograph is very aesthetically pleasing, and the shapes of both the prisms and image itself are perfect. I"m surprised that its shot with an iPhone, but impressed. The photograph obviously has a good eye for photographic compostion.

Concrete bridges are my particular obsession and this is a fantastic photograph of one! The photographers choice to shoot in black and white was interesting, I wonder how this image would look in colour, particularly as the tones would probably be very desaturated. The lines are perfectly straight, which is good and the fading into the fog in the centre is very enigmatic. A wonderful photo

This is a wonderfully evocative photograph. Its reminiscent of the work of American landscape photographer Mark Ruwedel. I love the emptiness of the image, although it also has a poignancy knowing it was shot during the pandemic. The composition is very strong, the lines and shadows are well postioned within the frame, makikng a strong balance with the cloudless sky on the left side. Wonderful.

No shortage of subject matter for this contest, and a perfect brief to take out with you on a photo walk. This might feel like more of an urban or indoors theme, but maybe not! Tractor tracks in the wheat field, and the criss cross of tall flower stalks can be as linear as the verticals of a tower block, or a table-top of scattered pencils.
