This stunning image was taken in Vietnam. The moving subject was frozen with a fast 1/640 sec shutter speed, and a large enough aperture was used to render the wall behind sharply too. The 38mm focal length is wide enough to frame plenty of context, without adding any notable distortion.

This image was taken in Hong Kong. Patience was needed to wait for a suitable subject to walk by; the solitary figure adds to the brooding atmosphere of a lonely city at night. The neon lights pop against the darkness and spotlight the figure, while the vignette enhances the ominous mood and shrouds the edges of the frame with a gloomy abyss.

Humour is at the core of many great street photographs, and is part of what makes this image so appealing. We like the simplicity of the scene too. Nothing detracts from the compelling subject and the viewer is left with plenty of unanswered questions in which to draw their own conclusions.

Condensation partially obscures much of the frame and focuses the viewer’s attention towards the couple nearest the window. Karen noticed that the light from the woman’s phone appears to make her face glow. Observations like this are key when searching for a street scene that stands out.

We feel this image would be better suited as an entry in the Travel competition we’ll be running later in the year. It’s a stunning photo. We particularly like how the colourful cloth has been used to create a frame within a frame, drawing the viewer’s eye to the subject.
