Sunshine

June 2024

The timeless nature of this photo is quite stunning. If not for the newspaper giving the game away, you could be forgiven for thinking it was taken in the mid-century. It goes to show not a lot changes as time goes by, when the sun comes out we all revert to that base instinct of soaking it up. a visceral and beautiful portrait that is a joy to stare at.

When it came to the brief, this image arguably hit it more squarely than most of the other images. I think we can all imagine what this moment feels like, which is what a photograph should do. The sunshine moves through the water in a wonderfully defused way, helped along by that soft focal distance. Warmth oozes from the image and the hair almost moves as you stare.

The warmth of the sun radiates out from this frame. the texture of the rendering becomes almost tactile and you can hear the pages of the newspaper rustling if you stare long enough. Those beautiful contrasting shadows make the colours pop that little bit more, while the finer more delicate shadows that cobweb through the frame divide the image up pleasingly. A good photograph should put you in the frame and I believe this does that well. Congrats.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** It’s a cheery weather forecaster that announces a sunny day to come, and with good reason. It brings out the best in us, and in the world around us. For a photographer it puts a spring in our step, and transforms our photography. Bright, saturated hues, sharp shadows, rich blue skies and frames bursting with energy. This is a broad brief that could encompass many themes, but with an emphasis on the particular mood and imagery that bright sunshine helps create.
