This most fundamental creative device of our cameras, and perhaps the one that still helps distinguish most images taken on DSLR and mirrorless cameras from those shot on phones. There’s an excitement that comes from playing with depth of field, and bringing sharp focus onto the area of a scene that we’re most interested in. This is a catch-all contest designed to show everything that can be achieved when we open our apertures wide, and so any subject is allowed. Images can be shot on any device, and whilst we’re not forbidding the creation of a shallow depth of field effect using software, it had better be done well if it is going to compete with the real deal!
