Terns in Flight

This Great action shot of a Common Tern with not so common behaviour, is my winner. Most often they will hover over their prey and dive onto it. The image has the bonus of a fantastic reflection on the still water and little splash, all adding to the composition. I know from experience this is a very challenging shot to achieve, holding the bird in the frame whilst panning and holding the focus, as well as putting the time in, waiting for that moment when it all comes together. Well done.

A gorgeous image of the beautiful Common Tern against a pure blue sky. This beauty is enhanced with its classic 'angel' pose - wings arched and tail feathers fanned out. The detail in the highlights and shadows is just right and the focus excellent.

This amazing shot comes a close 2nd. At first glance I thought the bird was covered in foam :) but quickly realised it was ruffling its feathers after diving. The high shutter speed has helped to capture this rarely seen moment and the detail in the feathers and clear water droplets make it really special. The whole bird is also in focus - excellent!

The out of focus background/bokeh adds to this beautiful image of Terns feeding. It is well captured, in focus and well framed. However, IMO this image is spoilt a little by the Large signature right close to the birds

I love seeing Terns flying with fish in their mouths. Often they will just fly around with it showing off to other Terns before settling down on a perch to swallow it, which may take some time. This beautiful image captures that so well, with great detail and perfect lighting. Well done!

Love this shot of these beautiful Terns. It doesn't quite fit the brief of Terns in Flight but captures a special moment with the parents wings outstretched above the youngster, who is eagerly waiting to be fed with a large fish. Great focus, good balance of highlights v shadow detail and with only 1/800 sec shitter speed kept the image sharp.
