The Rule of Thirds

Brilliant ariel photography that uses the rule of thirds to break up the image and give it depth. The rule also works both ways with this shot as the kayaker balances the image horizontally whereas the image is divided up vertically perfectly with the line of the tide, wet, and dry sand.

Perfect composition and a great image all round. The changes in colour through the image, and focus divide the image up perfectly, furthermore, the image is then framed via the rule of thirds twice over horizontally with the pacing of the roos, great image.

It's almost as if the heron helped out with this one! Great image and naturally perfect framing using the rule of thirds perfectly via the subject. The subtle foreground and background of almost one-third proportion help emphasise the heron in the centre of the frame.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked 1000+ in this week’s Leaderboard.** This most well known of compositional guides can be useful to have in the back of your mind when the camera is to your eye, or you’re cropping an image. But it is as often broken as it is adhered to, and in breaking it there can be some more dramatic shots to be had. That said, this contest is designed for photos that do conform to the rule of thirds - having a prominent vertical or horizontal feature about a third of the way into the frame, which can produce a pleasing and well balanced feel. Any subjects are welcome.
