Toning

March 2016

The texture and toning added to this picture has certainly changed what could be an ordinary looking image and boosted its impact quite dramatically. The composition of the balancing stones in the centre and the branch with the autumnal leaves surrounded by the fading texture has been applied nicely. The photographer has taken this image from a low angle and has obviously experimented with the composition to get the right combination within the frame. Well done this is a nice image.

The light in this image is very beautiful, combined with the falling water droplets all around the cup of flowers. You have a certain area nice and sharp with the rest of the scene out-of-focus to stop your eye wandering too far from the flowers. The warm light tones have been added perfectly to create a beautiful scene. The photographer has expertly arranged and processed the image just right, with the light and colours creating a harmonious and pleasing scene.

The silhouette of the figures within the water spray against the setting sun's light is a beautiful image, those perfect days in summer with the family having fun. The photographer has captured a wonderful scene and atmosphere with the family and has been boosted by the processing and toning within this image. You will always shoot a series of images within scenes like this to get an image that you like. Your eye stays within the scene focusing on the family first and then the faded figure to the right. Well done for spotting the scene and the processing – it is a nice photograph.

The star of the show within this image is the light making the picture glow. The photographer has carefully placed the main stem giving the glowing light through the wet branches centre stage. They have not only spotted what is a very difficult subject to photograph but have used the longer lens to great effect compressing the view and combined with the warm tone and light has really made this picture pop. This is a firm favourite of mine and has always stood out from the crowd and which certainly deserves 1st place in the competition.

Woodland images with fog just ooze atmosphere as does this forest scene. It does give you a little uneasy feeling of being off balance with the trees growing or falling in different directions with the mountain forest sloping off to the left, but that just adds to a beautifully captured scene. Fog is certainly a gift to photographers in scenes like this and the processing with a tone added really gives this shot some punch. The tones have been added nicely with the fine detail in the trees nice and sharp, all making up to a fine image indeed.

The fact that this is a summer's day does say how the British weather can be so different. I like this image for the atmosphere created by the fog and the processing using split toning. The composition of the fence fading into the mist along with the walkers has been captured perfectly. This is a great example of how toning has created a beautiful atmospheric mood. Without the colours added this would not catch the eye or mood in quite the same way.

This is a strange image and certainly catches the eye with the model wearing the gas mask. She has been expertly arranged to mimic the shape of the mask and would not have the same impact if posing in a different position. The image does make the viewer feel uneasy and the toning achieved through cross processing has added to the atmosphere. Well done to the photographer for creating an image that is out of the ordinary and different, it certainly caught my attention.

The converging lines disappearing into the distance is a classic but effective composition which has been caught in this image perfectly. The fact that we are looking at the scene from the front of a tube train on what looks like a late autumn morning in thick fog just makes this picture a little different from the rest. Not many people get the chance to capture unique scenes like this, and the photographer has done this beautifully. The muted colours along with the nicely balanced toning give this picture a well deserved placing.

I love the unusual nature of this photograph, it just goes to show with looking into the out-of-the-ordinary places some great pictures can be found, and the photographer has in this image a perfect example of the simple but effective eye catching picture. The placing of the word in the centre position and the leg to the right of the word would be a very ordinary image but the processing and toning applied within this picture has produced an eye catching image, so well done to the photographer for checking out those unusual places for this photo.

This picture is my son's favourite, with the title of the image, Hide and Seek, it sums up what this picture is about. It does feel like there is a connection between the spider and the viewer with your eye firmly drawn to the spider's eyes and the out-of-focus areas not distracting you to any other part of the image but managing to keep the spider's eyes sharp and in focus. The warm tone applied to the picture also helps you to enjoy what is a wonderful moment in time.

This is an image which has grown on me and it's a pleasure to see a long exposure which has been recognised as having more impact in colour. The fifteen seconds are just right to still see some texture in the moving water and around the ship. The ship itself with the colour of the rusting hull has blended well with the tone of the water and fog which has been added with great care as not to detract away from the main subject but create a wonderful mood.

This is a beautiful moment between the woman and the child, the photographer has captured their faces nice and sharp and their smiles are a touching moment. The light and contrast on the faces are just right but I would have liked to have seen the image a little brighter and more of the loving embrace with the surrounding texture a little less prominent – this would not have detracted from the main subjects. The dark tone to this image works well with this picture and overall this image has a wonderful feel to it.

Toning is the process of adding colour tints to an image. Traditionally this was a darkroom process, used to change the colour of black and white photographs. Nowadays, with Photoshop and Lightroom, there are all kinds of ways you can use toning to enhance your images - it’s now possible to apply the technique to colour images, for instance. For this challenge, we want you to explore the potential of toning in your own work, try to match the toning to the image taken to add or create the mood or atmosphere you have in mind.
