Trains

August 2025

A truly classic shot of a steam engine from the early 1950s—a beautiful piece of engineering captured in all its glory. The angle is perfect, showcasing the train as it powers through the English countryside, smoke billowing dramatically overhead. Love the detail of the engine drivers leaning out—adds so much character. Fantastic capture!

This is a fantastic 'toy-town' shot of a GWR train, using the tilt-shift effect to create the illusion of a miniature model within a real-world scene. The elevated viewpoint works brilliantly, with the beautiful Cornish coast providing a stunning backdrop. A cleverly observed and skilfully executed image.

Love this shot of a train passing through the narrow streets of Hanoi, Vietnam. It's a well-known and often-photographed location, but this image really stands out. It feels like a celebration of the train itself—tourists capturing the moment on their phones, creating an almost festive, party-like atmosphere. Fantastic work!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked 1001+ in this week’s Leaderboard.** Rail networks criss-cross our nations, and are a perennial favourite of photographers. In this contest any imagery of trains, the infrastructure that carries and supports them, and the stations where they pick up and deposit their loads are welcomed. We’re celebrating both the old and the new, the technology and the people that make this form of transport so important still, and perhaps poised to be even more so again, as we seek more environmentally sustainable ways than the car and the plane to get us and our goods around.
