Sadly there was no title or information for this image and I really would have liked to learn more. Perhaps the photographer would provide me with some background. However the moment is beautifully captured and perfectly exposed. A very worthy member of my top ten.

This was in my top ten from the first viewing. It captures the real drama of the theatre and makes full use of the available light. For me the composition is perfect with the use of negative space in the top half of the image placing the viewers focus on the actor.

One of the most difficult situations when photographing live performances in the theatre is capturing low-light situations, where spotlights have a tendency to burn-out faces. This image manages the situation well and I simply wanted to be there and have the opportunity.

Meet the judge

Their big moment awaits and just a final opportunity to practise their moves before going on stage. There is a wonderful contrast between the far group, which is very much together and the near group each doing their own thing, whether standing calmly, viewing the other 's efforts or simply having a final practice. A captivating image.

Having visited Verona and sat in the "Arena" I can only imagine the drama and spectacle of a live performance, but this image goes a long way to bringing the spectacle alive. This for me is the stand-out image where the full stage is included.

Theatre - whether staged by major production companies in grand city centre venues, by rural touring groups or by local drama clubs - present wonderful opportunities to capture exciting images. Managing stage lighting can be challenging. The focus of this contest is the "players" not the architecture. Let's see images of the excitement, drama and humour that make live theatre such an enduring experience.
