I love the grainy, film vibe of this image. The description doesn't mention whether the photograph was actually shot on film or made look this way with a mix of camera setting and editing, but at the end it doesn't matter. However obtained, it's a look that works very well when matched with the classic subject of the suited man and the old cathedral, adding character to the shot and enhancing its story-telling capabilities. The longer shutter speed that allows the camera to capture the movement of the doves is a well thought-out choice. It adds dynamism and incredible visual impact to the shot. Last but not least, I love the reflection of the doves onto the floor. It shows us how wet that ground actually is, giving a real sense of 'gloomy rainy day' to the photograph. A great capture, well done!

I find this image very calm and peace-inducing, and I love it for it. Its minimalistic approach, with one centred subject and no frills, works very well in this shot, and is aided by the interesting (yet not distracting) surroundings. The location, in fact, provides the perfect clean canvas, at the same time adding shape, depth and interest to the shot. I like how the striking colours of the subject are in stark contrast with the muted tones of the environment, making it naturally stand out. Details that add charm to the shot: the light stretching across the floor and the foot raised mid-step. A fantastic capture, well done!

I find this shot quite different from any others submitted to this competition, and because of that it immediately caught my attention. The exposure is perfectly balanced, to the point where the fireworks cast just enough light upon the people below to highlight their silhouettes. Their shapes are defined enough to be told apart, yet still mysteriously wrapped in darkness, adding charm and uniqueness to the shot. Personally, I think the image would have benefited from the umbrella corner (or leaf?) on the left not being there, but it's a detail in an otherwise great and one-of-a-kind shot. This photograph (captured with a phone!) certainly deserves praise. Well done!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Prone to being lost, and to folding inside out in the slightest breeze, the umbrella nevertheless helps keep our quiffs and beehives largely dry and intact when the heavens open. You might have had fun shooting an umbrella as a prop, or catching passersby wrestling with them in a storm.
