I love the rather abstract feel this image has, created by filling the frame with relatively regularly positioned subjects. This has the effect of adding another dimension to the image, so rather than just being a photo of some tomatoes, it becomes equally about shapes, patterns, textures and colours etc. Presented in this way there is plenty to hold the viewer's interest, as the eyes can explore the frame to seek out the differences and similarities between each individual subject. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
A lovely selection of fresh produce, wonderfully captured. I love the tones of the image, with a slight softness which maybe prevents the vibrant olours becoming overpowering. I am not sure if the setup is natural as "found" or whether each item has been carefully positioned, but whichever it is, it works. There are plenty of shapes and textures within the frame to hold and attention, and importantly for this contest, the tomatoes look especially inviting! Congratulations on your third place finish.
I love this image and for me it stands out as the winning shot for a number of reasons. The setup looks natural and inviting, and by shooting in what appears to be good natural light, everything looks fresh with vibrant but natural colours. The tomatoes take centre stage, but we get a sense of the context in the surrounding objects around the edges of the frame, suggesting preparation of some tomato-based dish, maybe a batch of delicious tomato sauce? Whether real or entirely set up for the photograph, it does not matter, as it makes for a lovely fresh and colourful shot. Congratulations on your winning image.

A simple scene, but one that has been well captured following your realisation of the potential for a great shot. It can be difficult getting a suitable composition where you have little control over the positioning of the subject (the shopkeeper likely not being best pleased if you were to rearrange their display!). However by filling the frame with the trays of tomatoes, we get a more abstract look to the shot, which is pleasing to view. Being shot outdoors in rainy weather has produced some gentle natural light, and the addition of the raindrops brings a lovely freshness, which suits the subject. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
Meet the judge
A meal as simple but tasty as it gets, beautifully captured to bring out the colours and textures. Lighting looks natural and everything is well-lit, with no areas of deep shadow, and some lovely catch lights, helping keep everything vibrant. Importantly in food photography, you have made the food look delicious and tasty, inviting the viewer in for a taste. Congratulations on your second place finish.

In this contest I would like to see your photos of one or more raw, uncooked tomatoes. The tomatoes can be whole or sliced etc., but must be uncooked. Images could show the tomatoes alone, with other items in a still-life composition, still growing, being sold or prepared in a cold dish such as a salad. The tomatoes should be the focal point of your image. Photos can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to seeing your entries.
