Urban Landscape

September 2018

This is classic modern London architecture at its best, and the composition of the frame is strong. By waiting for the plane to fly overhead the photographer has increased the interest and it has great impact on the viewer. The black and white finish is strong and the photographer has processed it to a high level.

This is a classic view of the iconic Big Ben at night using the flow of the traffic to create a light painting effect. The timing of the shot is spot on and the composition is good. The only thing that could have made it more effective would have been to shoot during the twilight hour so the sky has a blue tint as the black is a bit dominating.

I love the textures of the buildings in the background, teamed against the vibrant colours of the people below. The photographer has created an interesting image of a modern day scene that would otherwise be quite mundane. The multiple exposures shows the passing of time, and the originality and uniqueness of this image makes it a great winning Urban landscape. Congratulations!

It’s time to go metropolis mad and get creative in the urban environment. The human-made landscape can be a visual feast for photographers. We’re looking for any angle on the subject; from industrial vistas to amazing architecture or perhaps you want to communicate a deeper message about the concrete world we’ve made.

This image really pulls you in and asks you to explore the scene. The photographer has done well to light it with a warm tone however the foreground of the scene could do with a little brightening to bring back some of the detail.

The clock on the right hand side of the frame is the key to its success. The time reads 9.55am, and you get the impression that at 10am the pool will be open and the stillness and calmness captured beautifully in this scene will be gone! I love the play with the vertical and horizontal lines, teamed against the curves of the pool. It’s a clever composition that I could look at for ages.

The third place entry is a classic image. The photographer has put all the right elements in exactly the right place. The composition from the low angle works well framing the building in the background between the legs of the house. The building is an interesting subject to photograph as its modern design appears to almost look as if an spaceship from another planet has landed!
