Watches, Clocks and Timepieces

April 2024

This shot positively stood out from all the still life entries to this contest, immediately catching my attention. The wall of clocks is an interesting subject in itself, but it's even more interesting when matched with the man walking underneath it. The fact that the man is standing exactly by the middle of the clock wall adds a sense of symmetry and order to the image. (It would have been amazing if the man had been looking at his own wrist watch, but (sadly) we can't control real life!). I appreciate the photographer's decision to shoot/turn the shot into black and white, minimising colour clashing that often occurs in street photography, to allow the viewer's eye to concentrate on the subject without distractions. This is a fantastic capture the thoroughly deserves third place. Well done!

A beautifully simple and elegant shot with a nostalgic atmosphere. The colour scheme of teal, emerald and browns is charming and pleasing to the eye, and the rough texture of the old tome adds interest and detail to the otherwise 'smooth' subject and background. The side lighting, soft and diffused, creates enough shadows to appear intimate, creating emotional connectivity with the viewer. A fantastic shot that caught my eye from the moment I saw it. Well done!

A powerful-looking image that immediately caught my attention for his neat minimalism. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading the creation process of this shot in the image description. The photographer describes using a phone and a tablet to light this image in a dark room - it goes to show how expensive equipment isn't always needed to create a strong shot! The choice of using side lighting is smart. The resulting low key lighting allows for a powerful capture that enhances the subject's silhouette and main features whilst maintaining an aura of mystery. In this case, however, I wish the lighting was as intense on the right as it is on the left, and that there was at least some low-key fill light to illuminate more of the watch dial. A fantastic shot with props to the photographer for creativity!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked 1001+ in this week’s Leaderboard.** How have we humans measured time over the years? Clocks, watches, timepieces, and nowadays mobile phones, of course. But did you also know that obelisks were used by the Ancient Egyptians as a kind of giant shadow clock, or sundial, and what about advent candles, stone circles, and hourglasses, which all measure time in different ways.
