This is such an evocative and brooding image. What sets it apart from other wild weather lighthouse scenes is that it is much more of a rounded seascape, with the crashing waves part of a wider viewpoint. The composition between the land and sea elements are well balanced and superbly timed. The overall mood is ideally suited for black and white. Perhaps the only thing that could lift it for me is if the lighthouse was lit.
Meet the expert judge
Another ubiquitous lighthouse seascape, but what I really like about this one is the way the spray is drifting in the high winds, rather than being completely frozen. While both can work equally effectively there is an ethereal quality to this capture. The subtle breaking light and timing of the shot do just enough to keep the lighthouse and breakwater revealed against the dark backdrop, allowing the viewer understand what they're looking at.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Waves of the watery kind in this contest. Whether you're shooting from a nice dry beach, or taking your waterproofed camera into the surf, we're exploring the many ways in which water swells and breaks. That could be far out at sea or more commonly when it reaches land. People and craft are welcome in the pictures, so we may see a surfer or a jetski or two.
