Wildflowers

May 2024

This image has well balanced composition that makes it stand out from the rest. First of all, the two layers it's made of (the poppies in the foreground and the hill with trees in the background) add interest and depth to the shot. Secondly, the line of trees on the hill (that has a pleasant curve as it is) culminates in the bushy tree that falls perfectly in the centre of the frame underneath the swivelling orange cloud. Lastly, the two larger trees neatly frame the shot on either side. The viewer's eye is taken on a journey in this image; across the poppy field and up the line of trees, and all the way to the centre of the frame and the sun-setting sky. This is a well thought-out shot that certainly stands out from the rest. Well done!

Wonderful use of shallow depth of field in this image, skilfully employed to isolate the main subject and turn the surrounding flowers into soft blurs of colour. The combination of greens, blues, purples and yellows makes for an extremely pleasant colour scheme that is deeply attractive to look at. This image is proof that a capture doesn't have to complicated in order to be striking. A fantastic shot, well done!

In a sea of blue-skied landscapes, this image positively stood out. The dense rhododendron forest is quite a unique subject as it is, and especially from the high angle it is photographed from. The image becomes even more unique when matched with the low clouds and misty weather, which gift the shot with an eerie and surreal atmosphere that is deeply captivating. The colour grading, muting and cooling down the greens, allows for the pinks and reds of the flowers to truly stand out. This is a fantastic capture that thoroughly deserves recognition. Well done!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** We’ve been cultivating, hybridising and planting flowers for millennia, but for this ranked contest we're focussing on flowers occurring more naturally than this - the native species that exist in the wild, and seed, grow and reproduce entirely of their own volition. Images can be colour or black and white, and anything from close-ups to wider landscapes, so long as wildflowers feature prominently.
