Congratulations on the winning photograph!

For me, this photograph has so many qualities. The polar bear itself is well composed giving space around it in the direction it appears to be moving into. The shades of subtle colours and greys in the ice and the overall clarity and detail deliver a feel of how harsh the habitat is to the viewer.

The bear is well captured in motion and the addition of another species, the gull adds further interest.

I liked the inclusion of the surrounding colours of the beautiful woodland habitat for this deer. The scale is great too - a good mix of habitat and main subject.

I couldn't help but feel that compositionally it could have been improved so the log pile wasn't directly behind the deer as it competes for attention when the eye is on the main subject.

This very nearly made it into the commended images selection. The elephants against the backdrop of the hills looks incredible providing great context. The elephants and their scale against this backdrop is where the interest is and I feel the photograph would have had so much more impact if it was composed to include less of the grass foreground and more of the hills instead.

Great photograph! I really liked the composition of the gannets to include the elements of the habitat - the water, the cliffs and the rock the subjects are photographed on.

The depth of field helps the subjects stand out but not so much that we lose context of the habitat behind.

Wildlife photography is not always about frame filling portraits, we’d like to see examples of a more contextual approach. We’re looking for wildlife subjects photographed with as much emphasis on their habitat, relationships with other species or as part of a dramatic landscape or against a dramatic sky, for example.
