This month’s winner was taken from Beinn a’Chrulaiste, a mountain that overlooks Glen Coe. A blizzard made the high vantage point difficult to reach, but it was worth it. Wisps of thick cloud bleed seamlessly into the wintry landscape, and the diffused light emits a gorgeous warming glow. Leading lines draw the viewer’s eye to the central mountain and a copse of trees provides depth.
This stunning photograph was captured without a tripod, which is particularly impressive considering the near-perfect composition. The pathway leads the viewer’s eye towards the subject – standing within the smaller of the two naturally formed holes. The many blue tones have been beautifully realized, and various layer masks were used to precisely tweak the image.

This rather handsome European crested tit has been captured amid a flurry of snow. An aperture of f/5 and a long 300mm focal length has created a suitably shallow depth of field, allowing the crisp subject to pop against the blurred background. Different sized snowflakes create a sense of depth, and negative space is created by positioning the subject to the left of the frame.
No wintry shortlist would be complete without at least one image of an aurora, and no photography trip to Iceland would be complete without capturing a shot of Kirkjufell. This stunning image combines both. The body of water and reflection provides interest throughout the frame, and the panoramic angle of view allows the viewer to witness the sprawling aurora in its entirety.

We cannot shortlist images that do not contain EXIF data. But this beautiful minimalist black and white photograph deserves a glowing review. The trees sit equal distance apart and on an even plane, and the snow has been exposed properly to appear pure white. Each tree is tack-sharp and plenty of contrast separates the subjects from the white background.
