We love this shot. The lighting, composition and exposure all perfectly compliment the subject, which is very well spotted! The scene ideally encapsulates the brief for this round, capturing the smaller details in a moment oozing with winter atmosphere. Well done on!

The winter season isn't all about huge expanses of snowy landscapes. For this round we want to see your best shots of wintery detail, from frosty closeups of ice on vegetation to abstract exposures of barren woodlands. Look for details which sum up the atmosphere of the season,

There is some great minimalism at play here. The placement of the tree and the curve of snow break up the frame, but we're still able to focus on the simple contrasts of tone. High key and high impact. Another wonderful detail shot, which tells a story about the winter season.

What a wonderfully abstract image! The choice of longer exposure is inspired and there is an almost ICM style to the scene. The lengthened shutter speed has drawn across the frame with the falling snow, creating a painterly appearance. It's a nice idea and is well executed. Congratulations.

What a lovely landscape scene. It's a typical rural British landscape and the colours and detail are masterfully controlled. There is some clipping of highlights, but it all looks perfectly intentional, creating a dazzling high key effect. Very simple and beautiful. Very well done indeed.

Proving you don't need a hugely expensive camera to take incredible images, we love that this image was taken on something other than a DSLR or Mirrorless camera. The colour and detail are superb and you can really feel the cold air against your face when looking at this shot. Well done!

Another wonderful detail shot, which tells a story about the winter season. The colour and detail are lovely, while the composition is simple and restrained. It proves how beneficial it can be to look a little closer every time you're out shooting winter landscapes. Congratulations.

There were many opportunities to capture smaller details for this round and wildlife many many appearances. This scene is unique however. It has a tranquility about it – a serene moment of contemplation on this detail-sparse season. The muted colour makes the fox stand out and the placement is very nicely done.

This is a very dark and brooding shot, worthy of an episode of Game of Thrones or a similar fantasy series. The winter element is hard to miss, but it's really quite understated, while the compressed exposure really brings out the atmosphere of the season. Nicely composed and captured.

Another superb wildlife scene which makes the most of the environment. Shots like this prove that you don't need to travel great distances to find excellent subject matter. The colour and detail are superb and you can really feel the cold air against your face when looking at this shot.

Meet the expert judge

We saw surprisingly few aerial shots this round so this shot was refreshing. It's simple but abstract, creating a tranquil journey for our eye to follow. The 2-dimensional nature of the frame means we can look at a wider scene much as we might a small detail. Well done.
