First of all thank you for entering my World War II competition, and secondly thank you for submitting such an amazing image and thirdly congratulations in reaching the judges top 10.
I like this image because it delivers all the criteria for a classic shot of this beautiful plane. It couldn’t be a WWII contest without a spitfire in the top 10, and boy were there a lot to choose from! But this image is perfect, great colour tones, detail is amazing, no distractions, perfect propeller blur….everything is just faultless.
Thanks again for entering, well done and keep taking amazing pictures. Stay safe, regards, Martin

I like this image because it tells a great story of a moment of peace and quiet, a moment of solitude and reflection before the carnage begins again. A great character, superb environmental setting and beautiful colour tones all delivered into one compelling well executed image.

I like this image because it is such a beautifully composed and lit example of this timeline shoot. There were a large number of superb Lancaster bomber night shoots submitted in this competition, with many being a ‘rubber stamp carbon copy’ of one another - but given the experience and limited angles you all end up with similar images which is a challenge - all of which are good images. However, this image is more than good, it stood out as the lighting was so striking it made the whole image pop from the competition and I settled on loving this image.

I like this image because it was by far the most action packed image. I love the sense of depth, multiple focal points and the smoke adding layers to the image. A well presented and executed image with some clever thought into what delivers a motion film quality to it.

I like this image because it tells a very deep and chilling story. I think you’ve reimagined a photoshoot scenario and delivered a very deep disturbing image that reminds us of the deep suffering and horrors of war and the young lives it impacts. The technical delivery of the image is perfect, and wham the story gets you! I can hear the ringing in his ears, smell the dirt and see the red blood on his hands.

I like this image because it was very different in many ways. First of all the subject is different being a German Officer, striking a different angle on the rest of the crowd. I love the simplicity of the composition yet the lighting and detail are so very complex, almost delivering a surreal computer generated feel to the image - producing a very dark sinister feeling to this military leader. Such a powerful military portrait, brilliant work.

I like this image because there is something very calm and serene yet dangerous and chilling, a sense of unknown. The calm come from the landscape’esc feel of the image with the composition, leading lines and soft ethereal fog. Yet danger comes as it delivers the harsh realities of young men going to war, the unknown as to what’s in the future and what’s lurking in the fog. A fantastic image with so many hidden meanings.

I like this image because it screams quality in so many ways. Technically it is perfect, a no distraction background allowing focus on the character, superb detail and a breathtaking mono conversion producing the most amazing tonal details. But what works most of all is the choice of character, the proud military sole in his body and eyes, his stoic salute, the stories he’d tell, his lost comrades all suited and booted as if he was still 19 years old. Magical!

I like this image because it stood out from the crowd. There were many monument and cenotaph images submitted but this by far was the most striking thought out image by far. The use of light and shadow, the colours, the simplicity all held together by a striking central composition is just simply a beautiful piece of artwork adding depth and character to a monument.

I like this image because you can feel the numbness, the pain and disturbed sole of this character. Superbly captured with a great choice of conversion to monochrome. I also love the falling rain, adding a sense of environment and noise to the image.
