**Open to photographers with a gold or silver ranking. There are two other 'Abstraction in nature' contests currently open to other ranks. Take a look at the leaderboard for more information on Photocrowd rankings.** The word 'abstract' comes from the Latin word 'abstractus', meaning 'detached'. In terms of photography, this can mean detached from context, leaving room for the imagination to make its own impressions or for the eye to simple enjoy what it's seeing, without applying meaning. Nature is such an intriguing setting for abstract photography because, in nature, patterns are everywhere, and the level of detail goes beyond anything a human could create.
