A very cool scene indeed – it would be interesting to linger over even without the horse, but perhaps not top 10 worthy, so it was that visual anchor in the scene that really made it stand out for me. Congratulations!

Ah, Bagan! A glorious and well-captured scene – well done. The light and faded tone feel magical. I wonder whether you took this from a balloon yourself or while standing on one of the temples. Congrats on coming in 4th place!

I find the light and colours to be extremely attractive in this picture. It almost feels like some kind of alien structure that has just landed... or perhaps that's just me. Congrats on capturing such a beautiful scene and for getting a "Highly Commended."

Wow! There were literally hundreds of Stonehenge shots entered into this contest but I liked this one the most. When there's such a famous well-photographed scene, you've got to get creative to capture something memorable – you've done that and I love the clouds and perfect sunset. Congratulations!

The Kalyan minaret... such an imposing structure with a grizzly history (they used to throw people to their deaths from the top, as you might already know!). I love the silhouetted figures at the bottom, which make the image stand out for me. Congratulations on making it into the top 10!

Congrats on capturing such a crisp, stunning scene and for getting a "Highly Commended." The framing is exceptionally good! I like how nothing or very little from the modern world can be seen in the frame, which helps me to imagine Romans wandering around.

Super cool shot you've captured here. Rajasthani step-wells are truly ancient and you've captured a fascinating human element to lend interest to the scene. I see that you were using a telephoto lens but judging by the focal length you weren't particularly far away from the subject – extra impressive.

This is absolutely beautiful. The yellow flowers echoing the sunset can't fail but to trigger some emotion in viewers. The semi-silhouetted castle seals the deal. You've captured an excellent image and the edit is well-handled. Congratulations on making it into the top 10!

Georgia is such a captivating and inspiring country. All of those fairytale landscapes and villages with their defensive towers – you've done a brilliant job of capturing this scene, which is beautiful and crisp. but also moody and pensive with the dark clouds. Congratulations on first place!

I love this shot of the daibutsu in Kamakura, Japan. Somehow he's looking more wisened and weather-worn that when I was there, several years ago now. The 50/50 division of the frame and the color and contrast look awesome. I also like the slight vignette effect. Congratulations on third place!

Love this image. The shadows on the Buddha's face create a lot of character and the slightly voyeuristic feeling of peeping at him through a hole lends a fun vibe to the scene overall. I'm off to Thailand in September, I'll try to find him. Congrats to you on coming in 5th place!

Congratulations on second place! This is a wonderful landscape from Wales. You have captured some stunning light and beautiful natural colours – I particularly like how the detail in the shadows is so well-preserved.. The edit doesn't feel overdone at all.

Matsumoto! I lived there for one year when I was in my twenties and I was always by the castle. It's an incredingly evocative place and the fact that you have the snowcapped Japanese Alps in most scenes is unforgettable. Congrats on capturing such a beautiful scene and for getting a "Highly Commended."

There were literally hundreds of Great Wall of China shots entered into the contest but I liked this one the most due to the light and composition. Congrats on capturing such a beautiful scene and for getting a "Highly Commended."

Congrats on capturing such a beautiful scene and for getting a "Highly Commended." This is a really cool drone shot that stands out due to the perfect light highlighting the building., as well as the excellent composition. Keep up the good work!

Our oldest structures, sites and artefacts, dating back many hundreds or thousands of years, provide evocative subject matter for the globetrotting photographer and history buff. In some locations structures remain intact or have been reconstructed, such as at Pompeii or Stonehenge, whilst in others there are only the merest traces of ancient civilisations remaining. Some sites are very well known, and photographed by many photographers each day, so present a real challenge if an original image is being sought. Photographing ancient artefacts usually involves photographing in museums, and here the challenges involve glass, permissions and limited viewpoints. We’re not sticking to a strict definition of ancient, but we could say that subjects must be no later in their origin than the Middle Ages.
