Architectural Detail

July 2024

This image is an attention grabber ! I love the contrast and the colour and the odd-ness/unique-ness of it. At first glance I thought it was a double exposure but when I look closer and read your comments, assume there's a reflection. Did you shoot it through a window perhaps ? I love it, it's original and graphic and architectural and I want to keep looking at it. Bravo, especailly on an iphone - a cracking image ! You so nearly came First, I want to tell you that not to annoy you but to illustrate how highly I regard this image, it was a really tough decision and is totally subjective. I'd prefer to award two or three winners rather than just one

Thanks for this - it's not just a dull image of two windows, it's got added interest and 'life'. Not just the bike but also the electric cable held by the metalwork and the broken downpipe. Compared to the hundreds of entries of a window or a door or gargoyle this has more to it and it stood out from the crowd. You've seen a scene, not just a 'thing' and captured it gently with nice composition. Keep looking for and finding such scenes that tell a story

This is a super shot of a lovely piece of architectural design. Symmetry is always a powerful visual tool and I can see that you've worked hard to be absolutely central. A half metre, or even less, can throw the symmetry out so it's really important to concentrate and really look at the scene. Which you've done. The eye is led in and up and down, it's a powerful shot of powerful architecture. The person - without him/her this shot would be ok but nothing special, with ; you've added scale and a sense of time. Here comes some constructive criticism based solely on my personal subjective opinion ; would the composition be improved if the person was to the left or right of centre ? As I say, that's my subjective opinion, you and others may totally disagree and that's fine ! I wonder if you also shot the person in different positions and selected this one, or perhaps you wanted them in the centre. It's a lovely shot, I hope you take my opinion as just that - it's just my opinion

This is a really super image. It's full of life, energy, drama, texture, architecture, engineering, scale. I'm sure there's a competition that this image would do really well in, but sorry this isn't it. The brief is architectural detail, (the study of smaller details). There were literally hundreds of entries that weren't on brief and nearly all were less 'detail-y' than this one, so I'm sorry to pick on you - I did so because the image caught my eye and I wanted to look at and study it, it captured me. So you're doing something very right with your composition and subject matter choice but enter it into a competition where it fits the brief perfectly.

this is a nice shot but not on brief ! Nice composition, nice black and white treatment, the path and the lights lead your eye in and I like the overhang of the structure on the right, which gives it extra dimension and depth. As a judge looking at hundreds of images I will 'no' the images that don't fulfil the brief - save this for a competition where it fits, like 'routes' or 'black and white architecture' or something like that. Intrigued to know where this fabulous place is....

There are always hundreds of images of staircases entered into architectural competitions, it's probably the most common subject matter. Looking up them or down them, because of their structure ; curves, perspective, scale, the pattern they make, they're an easy strong image because the staircase is doing all the work. So how refreshing to see an image of a staircase that's different ! Where the photographer has worked that bit harder to create an image. Where you've placed the stairs in the frame and the shadow, I love the shadow, it's perfect ! It gives a 2-d elevational view a 3-d quality. And is that a bottle of champagne in the centre ?! Thanks for an image that caught my attention as a thumbnail and larger, I enjoyed exploring the detail

Attention grabbing? You betcha ! This is stunning. THe composition's nice, even though it's a detail, the building is sitting in space, in its surroundings, it's been given a stage, a place, by this composition. Your timing is superb, perfect sky with detail in the highlights and detail in the building itself. That's not easy to do but you've nailed it. True - you had a great building to point your camera at and the weather and light are perfect but not everyone out in front of this scene would capture it so well. I have one tiny criticism, and please note it's only my personal opinion - i don't like names/watermarks on images. Yes, I understand you don't want anyone to steal it and you want people to know it's yours but. there are laws about copyright infringment so as long as you're careful where you put it and write metadata into it that displays the usage terms, you're covered for any improper use. For me an autograph spoils an image. But hey, it's a cracking image well done

**This contest is open to photographers ranked 1001+ in this week’s Leaderboard.** Good architecture is the sum of all its parts, and whilst an interesting building will often impress at first sight, it is in the studying of the smaller details that the quality of the design and build will be assessed. There is no restriction by age of building in this contest, so everything from gargoyles to zinc cladding can be entered. The architectural details can be on the outside or the inside of the building, but should really be part of the fabric of the building, rather than what one might think of as interior design that has been added after the building was completed.
