Great contest!

Judging this contest was not easy. There were a lot of great photos, but many of these tended to show a facade or interior that contained details somewhere within the overall scene, rather than what I was looking for in being a photo of the details themselves. Here though we have a perfect example of the theme. The subject may not be showy and flashy, but in some ways it is the simplicity and understated nature of the details that appeals. I love how the curl at the end of the hand rail mimics that of the door handle, with the shadow adding another dimension. The composition and framing is great, as we are in nice and close, but by including the hint of the steps and a small part of the door, we get a sense of the wider scene beyond the edges of the frame. Simple but very effective. Congratulations on your winning image.

Gargoyles and similarly placed characters on churches and cathedrals are fascinating to see, and we have a great capture here of a cheekily grinning fellow. We get a great view, which is good, as so often these stone details are hidden from view at ground level by being added to the upper sections of the structures. Good amount of contrast which ensures all the details of the character are retained. Well done on your top ten placing.

There is a lovely quality to the light in this image, which brings great clarity and tones to really accentuate the details of the elaborate arch. The image looks to have possibly been taken on an overcast day, which can be a boon for architectural photography, so details within the structure ars not obscured by deep shadows. The amount of detail captured here is amazing, leaving the viewer to only guess at the design of the building as a whole. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.

Something about this image kept drawing me to it. I think it is the combination of the use of the single colour throughout, and the intriguing shapes and patterns created by the origami-like folds, which draw the eye and then hold the attention as the eye explores. There is just enough detail showing to give the viewer an idea of the overall structure (located at Berrington Hall, if I am not mistaken?). Congratulations on your third place finish.

There is a wealth of detail on show here in what many would see as 'just a brick wall'. We get a great view of the differently laid brick panel, the octagonal window and the other little decorative design details. I do not know the purpose of the building, but many similar brick structures show that despite the mundanity of the material, many architects in the past filled the building facades with a number of attractive aesthetic details, there purely for decoration, rather than function. I love the overall tones of the image, and composition is neat and precise, strengthening the shot. Well done on your top ten placing.

Wow, what a superb detail shot. If this is just a small part I can only imagine how spectacular the whole interior of the cathedral is to view in person. No doubt captured in some challenging lighting conditions, most likely with low levels of light and possible artificial lighting too, you have done a great job to capture such a crisp and vibrant shot. Composition is good, with the intersection point placed on the upper right third line, which adds to the dynamism of the capture. Rich colours, but not overdone. Congratulations on your second place finish.

The beautiful lighting was an immediate draw to this image, showing that even metallic utilitarian structures can take on a look of beauty in the right light. The golden glow of the low sunlight provides a lovely contrast with the purply-bluish tint of the metal. It is difficult to get a sense of the scale of these structures, but that does not matter, as we can just appreciate the shapes and forms and the beautiful light. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.

There were a few entries in this contest of this particular part of this iconic building, but this one appealed the most. We get to see the details of the shapes and tiled surface details, but by including the little peep down through to the modern buildings opposite, the image conveys a real impression that we are up high, and not at ground level. Nicely framed and composed, giving good balance to the image. Well done on your top ten placing.

A very interesting image, full of different little details and features that are a pleasure to explore and view. Lighting has been well handled, as the sunlight looks strong, but you have not allowed the shadows to dominate or the white paintwork to be over-bright. I love all the extra details of the worn paint surfaces, the cracks in the plasterwork, the little utility pipe etc. Unusual and mundane in equal measures, but a great image. Well done on your top ten placing.

It is testament to the passion of the architect that such attention to detail is given to humble chimneys, which stand high up on th top of the building and out of view to most. Love the close-in view we see here, and the lighting is lovely, looking to be captured when the sun is low in the sky and castng a goden glow on the sandy-coloured stone. Good contrasts to make the best of the shapes and forms of the strucures. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.

See more contest details

In this contest I would like to see your photos that focus on the architectural details of a building. You could show details such as carvings, patterns, shapes or other design elements, whether on the interior or exterior, and showing either modern or older architectural styles. Your image must focus only on the details of the architecture, so should show a closer view of a building rather than a wider street view. Try to show the detail in a way that somehow defines the character of the building as a whole. Images can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to seeing your entries.
