A refreshing take on the Autumn Colours theme; it captures the rusty, warm hues of the season without an acer in sight. Centred compositions often have to work harder to hold a viewer’s attention, but the framing is beautifully judged here, with spikes of detail throughout the picture keeping things lively. The styling is excellent, too; aside from the hair and shoes mirroring the earthy tones, the white bag draws the eye, while the lines on the jacket echo the lines in the tracks.
Another alternative take on the theme; golden colours and a dramatic seasonal event in perfect harmony. Photographing a leaping salmon requires a bucketload of skill, persistence and a firm knowledge of the subject and environment. Trying to focus at the point that a fish will leap is an incredible challenge, and what makes this shot all the more remarkable is that it was taken on a 100mm macro lens. Macro lenses are optimised for close-focus work and aren’t typically the fastest-focusing for action photography. So, hats off to the photographer…

Simply beautiful. This is the sort of light that should get any landscape photographer’s pulse racing! Michael has composed and exposed this scene with great care, creating a wonderful blend of shadow and striking sunlight. There are so many appealing touches to keep the eye wandering through the frame, from the well-defined pools of light in the foreground and the fingers of mist in the distance to the bright patch beyond the gate that invites us deeper into the picture.
