The subject is clear yet rendered in an almost abstract way. The lighting is superb and exposure is masterfully controlled.

One of the aspects which make monochrome macro images so alluring is the removal of any distracting colour. This shot demonstrates the effect nicely, allowing us an unhindered view of the subject's eyes. The tonal contrast, neutral background and lighting highlight the hairs on the insect's body and allow us to appreciate the fall-off in sharpness without our gaze being influenced by strong colours.
We were sent many abstract miniature studies for this round, yet this one is separated by its beautiful tonality and spot on exposure. At first glance it is difficult to identify if the structures are metallic or organic, but the contrasting shades and shapes lend the composition a strong sense of direction which draws the eye and holds attention.
Spiders are probably not a favourite animal for many people, but there is no denying their mesmerizing body design. This shot makes superb use of dark-field-type lighting and captures every minute detail we could hope to see in a macro study. The web creates a tunnel-like effect which draws the eye to the centre of the frame. An exceptional shot of a creepy, yet beautiful subject. Well done!
