Black Animals

April 2023

I absolutely love this image as I'm always such a fan of captures of scenes often overlooked or unloved. The flies are posed symmetrically across the bulls nose in the lightest part of the image, well composed subjects for this unique image. I love the big yellow teeth looming below as well.

The pop of red amongst the dark black crown of feathers on this Eagle brings out the richness of the animals eyes. The exposure of the dark feathers is spot on, sometimes challenging with black animals, and the creamy green background is a perfect balance to prevent the subject from getting lost. It is a beautiful portrait!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** The blackness of animals seem to provoke particularly strong associations - the elegance, mystery, and power of a black panther, the cunning and regality of a raven, or the association between the dark arts and domesticated black cats. Images submitted to this contest can show wild, domestic, or captive animals.

Captivating minimalistic portrait of Paddy! The eye peeking out from a wild tangle of hair draws you right in. I personally really like that only half the face is exposed, and the rest melts back into the background of this moody image..
