This is a different kind of shot. Her determination in the pouring rain is what really makes the shot and tells the story, and you instantly want her to make it. The image looks analog and I wonder what year it was shot. Good choice to go with black and white.

This image is a nicely balanced black and white image with lots of funny and surprising details. As a viewer, you are drawn into the image and it lets you get really close to something quite dramatic that you usually only see from afar. The image truly captures the moment.

Nicely controlled image. Good balance between foreground, middle ground and background. The trees are essential in the image. All in all, it has a crisp, winters feel from the strong, low light and the long shadows. Keep up the good work.

This is a surprising, amusing composition and crop. The elevated view turns the athletes into silhouettes, creating shapes that are dynamic and very graphic, almost in a pattern. The players show total concentration, all eyes on the ball, and this, in combination with the falling snow, somehow makes for a very peaceful image and yet, amazingly, still bursting with movement. Very nice.

This is a nice composition, graphic and clean. The elevated point of view works well, and the curves of the track adds speed to the scene although the image is actually very still. The dramatic stadium light produces strong shadows, adding to the drama. This image would by no means have worked as well in color, so a good decision has been made.

This a happy, beautiful scene, capturing the moment really well. It is a nicely balanced image, not too photoshopped. Black and white is a good choice because the contrast helps to keep the important textures and tones of the image intact. Good work!

This is a very strong portrait. It has many details that keep you looking at it. The structure of the athletes’ skin and the freckles helps create the texture and tone of the image. The photographer has wisely refrained from photoshopping too heavily. The hands are a nice detail.

A perfect powder day. This is a beautiful, deceptively simple skiing image with amazing depth and perfect lighting. The timing here is essential. You don’t get many shots like this. The background with the soft, almost dripping shadows provide depth and also some mystery..

Drama! What a story told through strong backlit silhouettes. What happens next? The eyes are drawn first to the fringes of the cowboy about to fall, and then to all the other details of the image. The outline of the charging bull is almost iconic.

Amazing capture. It is a very dramatic shot but at the same times the tones are kept soft and clean. Often photographers are tempted to increase drama through extensive photoshopping, but this is a much better choice. However, I would add a small amount of grain.

This image has grit. It almost looks analog. The light is nice. The spectator and the wire not only adds depth but also tells a story which is, amazingly, almost quiet and calm. It is almost a frozen moment in time.

This is a classic cycling shot. Super nice composition. The road is as important part of the composition as the rider. The image has a quietness and solitude to it that I really like. I think we all know that feeling of riding into the light.

This a strong composition with an almost architectural feel to it. The exposure and gray scale is perfect. Both the athlete and the background are important in the image which I think is important. An elevated point of view often gives an image a more clean, graphic composition, and this is used well here. The look, tone and feel is understated, allowing the composition to stand out.

This is a different kind of running image. It has a reportage feel to it, making it feel real and unplanned. The strong flare and the reflection on the wet tarmac makes you feel like you are there yourself, in the heat just after the rain.

We’re applying the black and white treatment to sports photography here, and seeing how it brings a different look and feel to a genre of photography that we usually only ever see in full colour in news publications. Any sport is fair game (pun intended) and if adding a subtle colour tone such as sepia or blue to your black and white image is your preference, these are also fine to be included.
