One of the joys of Lasdun's national theatre is the shuttered concrete, the rich texture which this leaves in the concrete allow the large flat expanses to not feel overbearing and give the building a human scale. This image really captures that subtle texture.

Park hill is an excellent example of brutalism and this captures how well great buildings can be reused. The brightly coloured cladding really helps to lift the concrete and you've captured that balance wonderfully. The colours feel balanced and considered, great shot.

There is a somewhat dreamy quality to this photo, I particularly enjoy architectural details and the close-up shot hides the scale which allows the viewer to imagine the surrounding form. I love the colour which is brought by the activity of inhabiting the space. The bright red curtains act as a great focal point of the image and is subtely balanced with the cool greens of the glazing. Beautiful.

Stunning photo. The composition of the photo and the negative space are particular intriguing. The converging angles are dynamic and highlighting the triangular balconies instead of the more common views of the curved up-turned balconies shows a different side of this building. Technically brilliant and tonally beautiful, it really captures the essence of the Barbican. Congratulations!

A lovely photo, I enjoy the soft lighting and the emphasis of form. The activity in the foreground bring the picture to life. I enjoy the whimsy of the yellow cherry picker and the sharp colour contrast offsets the warm grey of the concrete well. Technically not the best but I really enjoy the postcard feel of this picture.

I love the crispness of this photo which emphasises the rectilinearity, but hasn't just been achieved by butchering the sharpness slider in Photoshop. I like the sharp contrast of the negative space which reads as a reflection of the building. Tonally excellent! I might have been tempted myself to remove the vignetting in the top right corner but great photo nonetheless!

Meet the judge

Compositionally this photo really works for me. The rotation of each tower allows you to see each one complete tower in a single viewpoint and this photo emphasises that greatly. The colours are beautifully balanced! My only criticism is it's slightly over sharpened to my eye but only a touch! Still great work!

Photos must be of Brutalist architecture built in the United Kingdom. Brutalism is often categorised by large monolithic sculptural forms, usually but not always constructed from in-situ concrete. Examples of UK Brutalism include the Barbican Estate in London, St. Peter's Seminary in Cardross, Preston bus station, Denys Lasdun's National Theatre plus many more.
