Cacti and Succulents

December 2021

The contrast between the two types of plants is what really makes this image shine. The delicate floating wildflowers create a wonderful juxtaposition to the harsh, hard brutality of the prickly pear cactus sitting, monstrously in the middle of the frame.

What an exquisitely composed and arranged image. The design and graphic structure of the composition is simply sublime. This is accentuated by masterful handling of the tonality and highly attuned sensitivity to the colour palette. Really lovely work, well done.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Succulents are plants that have parts which are thickened and fleshy and well adapted to storing water and surviving in water-scarce environments. One particular family, Cactaceae (Cactus) are almost all succulents. They store water in their stems, and their true leaves have usually been lost, replaced with spines, which are highly modified leaves. There are many strange-looking and beautiful cacti and succulents, and they are very popular as houseplants. All types, whether in the wild, or on your windowsill, can be entered into this contest.

When I first saw this I thought it looked as if the plants were dancing in the window light and then I read the title and realised I wasn't the only one who had thought this. I love the simplicity of the setting, just a simple window sill. Delightful.
